CARLISLE, Pa. — The U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold is hoping to attract local and diverse suppliers to its stores in the markets in which it operates.

Ahold USA said Thursday that it had its first annual Local/Diverse Business Opportunity Fair last month. The fair attracted participants from more than 140 companies that were given the opportunity to have their products reviewed by Ahold USA procurement teams for placement in more than 750 stores throughout the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.

CARLISLE, Pa. — The U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold has appointed Raymond McCall SVP pharmacy and health and beauty care, the company said Wednesday.

McCall will be responsible for strategic leadership, direction and business plan design and execution for the pharmacy and health and beauty care teams for Ahold USA, which operates the Giant-Carlisle, Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop chains. He will be based out of the company’s Carlisle, Pa., support office.

Stop & Shop officially has launched a next-generation scanner via a mobile application.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop officially has launched a next-generation scanner via a mobile application.

Stop & Shop said its Scan It! Mobile app allows customers to complete an entire shopping trip on their iPhone 3GS or 4G. As previously reported by Drug Store News, the app, developed in partnership with Modiv Media, allows customers to scan items with their phone's camera. Once the shopping is complete, the information is relayed to the checkout register, thus speeding up the checkout process.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop opened a new store in Andover, Mass., on Friday, the company said.

The new store, which touts several full-service departments, also features Check It! self checkout lanes, Scan It! handheld devices that allow customers to scan and bag groceries while they shop, as well as Order It! deli kiosks, where shoppers may pre-order deli items. Redbox and Coinstar kiosks are also available, the company said.

Stop & Shop has commenced a fundraising campaign to benefit victims of the recent tornadoes in Massachusetts.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop has commenced a fundraising campaign to benefit victims of the recent tornadoes in Massachusetts.

The retailer said that 100% of the donations from the campaign, which will run from Friday through July 4, will go directly to the American Red Cross of central and western Massachusetts.

Sales for Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold increased 5.9% to $13.3 billion in first quarter 2011, the company said.

AMSTERDAM — Sales for Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold increased 5.9% to $13.3 billion in first quarter 2011, the company said.

This compared with first quarter 2010 sales of $12.6 billion at Ahold, which operates the Giant-Carlisle, Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop chains in the United States, as well as online grocer Peapod. Profits for the quarter were $419.1 million, a 6.2% increase over $394.6 million in 2010.

Sales for Ahold USA were $7.6 billion, a 7.4% increase over first quarter 2010. Same-store sales increased by 5% over last year.

The transaction involves stores in Freehold Township, Manalapan, Neptune City, Point Pleasant Beach and Long Branch, N.J. Stop & Shop currently operates 10 stores in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

The supermarket retailer said its annual Triple Winner Game — which has raised more than $50 million since 1991 — provides customers who make a $1 contribution to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with a Triple Winner scratch ticket, giving them the opportunity to win free store products, gift cards or cash prizes up to $10,000.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop has gone mobile.

The retailer on Monday announced that it has developed a mobile application, designed for iPhone and Android devices, which syncs with customer loyalty cards, providing access to online accounts. Customers can access store circulars to check out everyday savings on the go and also get directions to the nearest Stop & Shop.

Stop & Shop customers are invited to download the mobile app for free at the App Store or Android Market.

According to the reports, the new service, Peapod by Stop & Shop, will fill orders using the existing warehouse presence of Ahold supermarket banner Stop & Shop, which operates several stores in the city. In addition to groceries, Peapod also offers numerous health and beauty products.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop is taking supermarket energy efficiency to a new level at a store in New England.

The supermarket chain, owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold, announced the installation of a 400-kilowatt fuel cell at its store in East Torrington, Conn.

The fuel cell, a UTC Power PureCell System Model 400, is expected to generate more than 90% of the store’s electrical energy.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop announced Tuesday that its annual campaign that donates funds for hunger relief to local food pantries and regional food banks realized a 40% increase from last year.

The supermarket chain said that its Food for Friends campaign, which ran from Oct. 29 to Dec. 10, raised more than $2 million this year. Customers donated $1, $3 or $5 "paper turkeys" at their local Stop & Shop. Customer contributions accounted for 90% of the $2 million, while Stop & Shop contributed $500 per store.

LANDOVER, Md. — Two-and-a-half years after joining the company, Robin Michel is leaving as president of the Giant-Landover division of Ahold USA to pursue other opportunities, the company confirmed Monday.

Michel will depart at the end of the month, according to Ahold USA spokesperson Sara Neumann. She will be replaced on a temporary basis as operations chief by Don Sussman, EVP supply chain at Ahold, while the company conducts a search for a successor.
