A former executive of Supervalu has been tapped for a top position at Stater Bros. Markets, the supermarket chain said.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A former executive of Supervalu has been tapped for a top position at Stater Bros. Markets, the supermarket chain said.

Stater Bros. announced that former Supervalu EVP retail operations Peter Van Helden had been hired as president and COO of the privately owned San Bernardino, Calif.-based chain, which operates 167 stores in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. announced Dan Meyer has been promoted to EVP retail operations. In this position, Meyer will be responsible for the retail operations of all 167 Stater Bros. Supermarkets as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Training Center.

Meyer is a 42-year member of the Stater Bros. "family." He first joined Stater Bros. in 1971 as a Courtesy Clerk at the company's La Sierra Supermarket in Riverside and progressed through a range of retail store and district supervision positions.

Sales at Stater Brothers increased by 1.83% to $67.8 million in fiscal year 2012, the company said in an earnings report.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Sales at Stater Brothers increased by 1.83% to $67.8 million in fiscal year 2012, the company said in an earnings report.

The 167-store chain's sales for the fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, were $3.9 billion, thanks in part to an extra week; without the extra week, sales would be $3.8 billion, but still higher than 2011's $3.7 billion. Profit for the year was $37.7 million, compared with $26.3 million in fiscal year 2011.

Third-quarter sales for Stater Bros. rose more than $10 million during the period ended June 24, the retailer said Tuesday.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Third-quarter sales for Stater Bros. rose more than $10 million during the period ended June 24, the retailer said Tuesday.

Third-quarter sales increased 1.14% to $949.8 million, compared with $939 million in third quarter 2011. Same-store sales also rose 1.14% during the third quarter. For the 39-week period ended June 24, sales rose 3.51% to $2.8 billion, compared with $96.7 million in the year-ago period. Same-stores sales for the 39-week period also rose 3.51%.

Stater Bros. has opened its newest and most modern supermarket in Hesperia, Calif.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. has opened its newest and most modern supermarket in Hesperia, Calif.

The new Hesperia supermarket will replace a smaller Stater Bros. supermarket located nearby, which will close on July 31. At 56,586 sq. ft., the new state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly store is more than twice the size of the current supermarket by featuring wider aisles and nearly double the amount of parking spaces. Stater Bros. also operates two other supermarkets in Hesperia.

Stater Bros. board chairman and CEO Jack Brown confirmed that David Harris was promoted to the position of SVP finance, CFO and principal accounting officer at the company. Harris joined the company in 2009 as VP finance and was promoted to SVP finance last year.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. reported its second-quarter results for the period ended March 25.

The retailer's consolidated sales for the quarter rose nearly 2.7% to $937.7 million, compared with the year-ago period, while same-store sales also rose nearly 2.7%. Second-quarter net income totaled $16.4 million, compared with $9.3 million for second quarter of the prior year.

Stater Bros. is set to open its newest supermarket in Lake Elsinore, Calif.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. is set to open its newest supermarket in Lake Elsinore, Calif.

The 43,279-sq.-ft., state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly supermarket will open Feb. 22 and will be the third supermarket that Stater Bros. operates in Lake Elsinore.

Stater Bros. reported its first-quarter sales for fiscal year 2012 on Tuesday.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. reported its first-quarter sales for fiscal year 2012 on Tuesday.

First-quarter sales rose 6.86% to $960.7 million, compared with the year-ago period, while same-store sales also increased 6.86% to $61.7 million. The company also reported net income for the 13-week first quarter ended Dec. 25 totaled $9 million, compared with net income of $2.8 million during the 13-week first quarter ended Dec. 26, 2010.

A regional supermarket chain and its charitable arm once again has donated funds to the United States Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A regional supermarket chain and its charitable arm once again has donated funds to the United States Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program.

Stater Bros., along with Stater Bros. Charities, earlier this month presented a $26,000 check to the program, which will be used to purchase toys that will be distributed to community-based organizations in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Fourth quarter and fiscal year 2011 both proved positive for Stater Bros., the regional supermarket chain announced Tuesday.

For the fourth quarter ended Sept. 25, the retailer saw a 5% increase in sales to $941.9 million, compared with the year-ago period. For the 52-week fiscal year, sales rose 2.4% to $3.7 billion, the company said. Same-store sales for the fourth quarter and fiscal year experienced a 5% and 2.5% jump in same-store sales, respectively.

The Southern California-based supermarket chain said that Dan Meyer, a 41-year company veteran, has been promoted to the newly created role of SVP retail operations. In this capacity, Meyer will be responsible for the retail operations of all 167 Stater Bros. stores, as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Training Center. Meyer will report to George Frahm, EVP retail operations and administration.

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, supermarket retailer Stater Bros. will open a store in Grand Terrace, Calif., next week.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — In celebration of its 75th anniversary, supermarket retailer Stater Bros. will open a store in Grand Terrace, Calif., next week.

The 44,000-sq.-ft. store, which will host its grand opening on Aug. 24, replaces a smaller store located in the area. Additionally, Stater Bros. said that the new Grand Terrace supermarket has earned the GreenChill gold award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Consolidated sales for regional supermarket chain Stater Bros. rose more than 4% in the third quarter, the company said Wednesday.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Consolidated sales for regional supermarket chain Stater Bros. rose more than 4% in the third quarter, the company said Wednesday.

For the period ended June 26, Stater Bros. said consolidated sales reached $939 million, an increase of $39 million, or 4.33%, compared with the year-ago period. Similarly, same-store sales for the quarter rose $39 million, or 4.33%.

For the quarter, the retailer also reported third-quarter net income jumped 18.33% to $7.1 million, compared with third quarter 2010.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Second-quarter consolidated sales for regional supermarket chain Stater Bros. were up more than 3%, the company said.

Sales totaled $913.4 million for the period ended March 27, an increase of $27.9 million or 3.15%, compared with the year-ago period. Similarly, same-store sales also increased 3.15% or $27.9 million.

Stater Bros. also reported net income for the 13-week second quarter of $8.8 million, compared with net income of $6 million for second quarter 2010.

SAN FRANCISCO — A new bill introduced by a California assemblywoman aims to curb the sale of alcohol to minors by prohibiting sales at self-service checkouts.

Assembly Bill 183, introduced last month by Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco and San Mateo Counties, was passed by the assembly committee. Assemblywoman Ma said that self-service checkouts are susceptible to technological failures, allowing minors to purchase alcohol.

Stater Bros. announced that three of its supermarkets have received the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Award.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. announced that three of its supermarkets have received the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Award.

The regional chain said that the stores, all located in Southern California, earned the Gold Award from the EPA, the second-highest award offered by the agency to businesses that use refrigerants that do not harm the earth's ozone layer.

Stater Bros. has entered an agreement to purchase two stores from Albertsons in Lake Elsinore and Hesperia, Calif.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. has entered an agreement to purchase two stores from Albertsons in Lake Elsinore and Hesperia, Calif.

Stater Bros. said it expects to take possession of the locations from Albertsons, a Supervalu subsidiary, in mid-May. The California-based supermarket chain also said that the stores would receive several upgrades, including wider aisles; expanded and new full-service departments; and energy-efficient refrigeration, skylights and recycling centers.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society presented Brown with the award on Feb. 26 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., where 45 Medal of Honor recipients and other notable guests were gathered, the company reported.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Customers facing economic challenges caused a decline in Stater Bros.' first-quarter sales, the Southern California supermarket chain said Wednesday.

For the quarter ended Dec. 26, Stater Bros. experienced a 2.3% decline in supermarket sales, as did same-store sales — which dropped to $21.3 million — for the period. The chain said that its customers "continue to face tough economic challenges as our economy continues to have a negative effect on their family budgets."
