SHARON HILL, Pa. — Specialty infusion pharmacy company Biomed Pharmaceuticals has named Craig Mears as SVP sales and marketing, the company said Friday.

Mears will assume the new position effective immediately. He has more than 26 years of experience in sales, patient advocacy, product development, marketing, operations and clinical program development, most recently working for Biogen Idec's hemophilia business. He also has worked for Express Scripts' specialty pharmacy division, Accredo.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Kmart has started a fundraising campaign for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for childhood cancer, the mass merchandise retailer said.

Kmart announced the start of its 2013 St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign, under which members of the Shop Your Way loyalty program who donate between now and Dec. 28 will receive a coupon for 5% of the price back in points that they can use toward their next purchase. The offer lasts through Jan. 31, 2014.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Two organizations are providing an educational program centered on a serious form of arthritis that affects up to 2 million people in the United States.

The National Psoriasis Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation said they would partner for the second year to educate residents of southern California about psoriatic arthritis, a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects about 300,000 people in the state and 98,000 people in the Los Angeles area.

TORONTO — The Arthritis Society is donating more than C$4.5 million for arthritis research in Canada, the group said Wednesday.

The organization, which is Canada's largest nongovernment funder of basic and applied arthritis researcher, said the funding will be used for established researchers and young investigators who are new to research. The amount is equivalent to US$4.36 million.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved an injected drug for the bone marrow disorder myelodysplastic syndrome made by Dr. Reddy's Labs, the company said Tuesday.

HYDERABAD, India — The Food and Drug Administration has approved an injected drug for the bone marrow disorder myelodysplastic syndrome made by Dr. Reddy's Labs, the company said Tuesday.

Dr. Reddy's announced the approval of azacitidine injection in the 100-mg-per-vial strength. The drug is a generic version of Celgene's Vidaza, and Dr. Reddy's plans to launch the product in the near future.

Vidaza had sales of about $378.5 million during the 12-month period ended in July, according to IMS Health.

FRAZER, Pa. — The participation of reality TV star Jack Osbourne in "Dancing with the Stars" has garnered recognition and a donation from a drug maker.

Teva Pharmaceuticals said Tuesday it would donate $100,000 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to recognize Osbourne's decision to compete in the show. Osbourne, the son of rock musician Ozzy Osbourne and a television host and producer, was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS last year. Teva is the maker of Copaxone (glatiramer acetate), an injectable drug for the disease.

JERUSALEM — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new formulation of a cancer drug made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Teva said Tuesday.

The Israeli drug maker announced the approval of a liquid formulation of Treanda (bendamustine hydrochloride), which it said would eliminate the need for reconstitution.

The drug is used to treat indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has progressed during or within six months of treatment with Rituxan (rituximab), which is made by Genentech and Biogen Idec, and in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic chemotherapy pill for treating colorectal and breast cancers, the agency said Monday.

The FDA announced the approval of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries' capecitabine tablets in the 150-mg and 500-mg strengths. The drug is used to treat cancers that have metastasized, meaning they've spread to other parts of the body.

The drug is a generic version of Xeloda, made by Roche division Genentech. According to IMS Health, Xeloda had sales of $706.2 million last year.

NEW YORK — A drug for treating opioid dependence has been launched, the manufacturer said Monday.

Orexo announced the introduction of Zubsolv (buprenorphine; naloxone) sublingual tablets for the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence. The drug is designed for use as part of a broader treatment regimen that combines drug therapy and counseling.

Actavis has launched a generic version of an extended-release opioid painkiller, the company said.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Actavis has launched a generic version of an extended-release opioid painkiller, the company said.

The drug maker announced the launch of oxymorphone extended-release tablets in the 5-mg, 10-mg, 20-mg, 30-mg and 40-mg strengths. Actavis received approval for the drug in July.

The drug is a generic version of Endo's Opana ER. Endo is currently suing Actavis, alleging that Actavis' generic infringes some of its patents. The drug is used for around-the-clock pain relief.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Companies that make long-acting opioid painkillers will be required to conduct studies to assess their safety, while use of the drugs will be restricted, under new requirements from the Food and Drug Administration.

The agency announced new labeling changes and regulatory requirements for makers of extended-release and long-acting opioids, citing the risk the drugs carry of overdose, abuse and withdrawal. In response, a group also cautioned consumers to be careful when using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Avella announced that under the agreement, with Care1st Health Plan Arizona, Avella would deliver specialty services to members, dispensing specialty drugs and providing patient consultation and adherence monitoring. Care1st contracts with MedImpact Healthcare Systems for pharmacy benefit management services.

The FDA announced the approval of Abraxane (paclitaxel protein-bound particles for injectable suspension, albumin-bound) for patients with late-stage forms of the disease. The drug is a chemotherapy treatment already approved for treating breast and lung cancers.
