Food Lion store manager Charles Inman, who manages a Food Lion in Clayton, N.C., was named Delhaize Group's Store Manager of the Year, the company has announced.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion store manager Charles Inman, who manages a Food Lion in Clayton, N.C., was named Delhaize Group's Store Manager of the Year, the company has announced. 

Inman was selected among 3,400 store managers across the globe. In February, Inman was named Food Lion's Store Manager of the Year.  As a result, he became eligible for the Delhaize Group award, joining 11 other store managers representing the best of the best across the company.

Canus, a provider of goat's milk skin care products, is introducing its Caprina by Canus line of soaps, body washes and foaming milk baths to the U.S. market.

WATERBURY, Vt. — Canus, a provider of goat's milk skin care products, is introducing its Caprina by Canus line of soaps, body washes and foaming milk baths to the U.S. market. 

Canus launched Caprina in Canada in early 2009 and, starting in June, Caprina will be available in U.S. retail stores. Both Publix Super Markets with 933 of its stores across the southern United States and Hannaford's 180 locations throughout New England, will begin offering a selection of Caprina products.

The parent company of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket chains will buy three chains from Belgium-based Delhaize Group.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The parent company of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket chains will buy three chains from Belgium-based Delhaize Group.

Bi-Lo Holdings said it would acquire the Sweetbay, Harveys and Reid's chains from Delhaize for $265 million. The deal includes 72 Sweetbay stores, leases for 10 prior Sweetbay locations, 72 Harveys stores and 11 Reid's stores, for a total of 165 stores and 10,000 employees throughout the Southeast. Bi-Lo Holdings already operates 686 stores, 482 of which have pharmacies, throughout the southeast.

On May 1, Brookshire's Grocery held a grand opening ceremony for a new Super 1 Foods located at 9 Fair Ave. in Winnsboro, Texas, with a ribbon-cutting event. The company converted the store, which it purchased last year, from the Kaye's Fod Market format.

Food Lion has revamped 178 of its stores and hired 800 new employees, the Delhaize Group-owned supermarket chain said.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has revamped 178 of its stores and hired 800 new employees, the Delhaize Group-owned supermarket chain said.

The company said the stores would offer an improved shopping experience — such as faster checkout service — fresher produce through the "Fresh from the Field" initiative and cheaper private label products. The changes were made to stores in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Belgian international food retailer Delhaize Group, whose U.S. banners include Hannaford, Sweetbay and Food Lion, has announced that president and CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers intends to retire from his executive role by the end of this year.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Belgian international food retailer Delhaize Group, whose U.S. banners include Hannaford, Sweetbay and Food Lion, has announced that president and CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers intends to retire from his executive role by the end of this year.
 
As part of Delhaize’s succession plan, Beckers will stay in his post until a new CEO is appointed and a smooth transition has taken place, the company stated. He will continue to serve on the board, in a nonexecutive capacity, after stepping down as CEO.

In addition, Michael Fung will join the company as interim chief administrative officer overseeing finance, information technology, real estate and various administrative functions of the company. 

In connection with the foregoing changes, the original family management team Eric Schiffer, Jeff Gold and Howard Gold are no longer employed by the company.

The Delhaize Group shakeup continues as news circulates that its Sweetbay Supermarket division will shutter 33 underperforming stores in Florida by mid-February, according to a report on Tampa Bay Online.

BRUSSELS — The Delhaize Group shakeup continues as news circulates that its Sweetbay Supermarket division will shutter 33 underperforming stores in Florida by mid-February, according to a report on Tampa Bay Online.

The closures, which are part of a broader reorganization plan, will results in the loss of about 2,000 jobs in Florida and changes for its pharmacy customers. Following the closures, Sweetbay will operate 72 locations.

NEW YORK — Food Lion president Cathy Green Burns has left the company and is being succeeded by Beth Newlands Campbell as part of a major organizational shakeup at Delhaize America, according to published reports.

The shakeup comes on the heels of the Oct. 15 appointment of Roland Smith as president and CEO of Delhaize America and EVP of Delhaize Group. Smith, former president and CEO of The Wendy’s Co., replaced Ronald Hodge, who had been with the company for 33 years. Delhaize America is a division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Urgent care operator Solantic is moving its corporate headquarters from Florida to Tennessee, according to a local news report.

According to a report by The Independent Florida Alligator, the company’s corporate headquarters office is currently in Jacksonville but will be relocating to Nashville.

The report stated that Solantic’s 32 urgent care clinics in Florida will remain open.

There has been a sharp increase in sales of pseudoephedrine products just outside St. Charles County, Mo., which implemented a prescription requirement on the sale of PSE beginning Aug. 30, according to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published Monday.

LOUIS — There has been a sharp increase in sales of pseudoephedrine products just outside St. Charles County, Mo., which implemented a prescription requirement on the sale of PSE beginning Aug. 30, according to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published Monday that cited data from Det. Sgt. Jason Grellner, past president of the Missouri Narcotics Officers Association.

According to that data, sales of PSE products were up 81% in September versus August in Bridgeton, Mo., and increases in Maryland Heights and Chesterfield were 59% and 51%, respectively.

Delhaize America announced that it is expanding its Food Lion distribution center in Dunn, N.C.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Delhaize America announced that it is expanding its Food Lion distribution center in Dunn, N.C.

The company said the distribution center, which opened in 1987 and services 264 Food Lion stores in the area, will increase storage space by 54,000 sq. ft. to accomodate more than 4,000 refrigerated and frozen foods.

DULUTH, Ga. — Delhaize America banners are getting the kiosk treatment.

NCR is adding more than 800 Blockbuster Express kiosks to Delhaize America supermarkets, including Food Lion, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys and Reid's across 11 states.

Blockbuster Express kiosks will be located either inside or outside the stores and provide easy access to a wide selection of popular movies, starting at a promotional price of $1 per night per rental, NCR said.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced that it has donated $200,000 in cash to the American Red Cross to support tornado relief efforts in the Southern United States.

An additional donation of more than $75,000 will include product and relief kits containing hygiene and food items that will be distributed to hardest-hit areas.
