NEW YORK — Avon, a direct seller of beauty products, has outlined initial steps toward its previously announced cost-savings initiative, which includes the reduction of about 1,500 global jobs.

The company also announced that it will exit the South Korea and Vietnam markets. These actions are aimed at concentrating resources on high-priority markets and activities and boosting efficiencies, and are expected to be largely completed before the end of 2013, the company stated.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The professional skin care products market realized a 5.3% gain in 2011, according to a new report from Kline.

In the latest "Professional Skin Care Global Series: Market Analysis and Opportunities" report,  Kline found that sales for the European market came close to pre-recession peak levels, rising 4%, while China and South Korea posted growth of 9.3% and 9.5%, respectively, within the professional sector.

LONDON — Patent expirations of key blockbuster drugs and efforts by payers to contain costs are likely to bring strong growth to the global generic drug market in the next few years as market-earned revenues grow by more than $100 billion, according to an analysis by research firm Frost & Sullivan.

The report, titled "Generic Pharmaceuticals Market — A Global Analysis" and focusing on the United States and Europe, also found that healthcare expenditure and sales revenues are poised to shift to India, China, Brazil, Turkey and South Korea.

Merck will collaborate with a Korean manufacturer to develop a biosimilar version of a drug used for autoimmune diseases.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — Merck will collaborate with a Korean manufacturer to develop a biosimilar version of a drug used for autoimmune diseases.

Merck, which operates outside the United States and Canada as MSD to avoid confusion with Germany-based Merck KGaA, announced Monday a collaboration with Seoul, South Korea-based Hanwha Chemical to develop and commercialize HD203, a biosimilar version of Enbrel (etanercept), made by Amgen and Pfizer. The drug is used to treat such disorders as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

That’s among the offerings at South Korea’s Hana Bank, according to published reports. Reuters reported Wednesday that the bank offers the “S-Line” program, whereby customers who burn calories, lose at least 5% of their body weight per year or hold a gym membership get a higher interest rate on their accounts.

The program, whose name refers to the Korean term for an hourglass physique, has existed since 2008.
