WASHINGTON — Legislation to expand the use of telehealth technology under Medicare to reduce hospital re-admissions in rural and underserved communities has been re-introduced by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

The bipartisan Fostering Independence Through Technology Act, S. 596, would create a pilot program to provide budget neutral incentives for home health agencies across the country to use remote patient monitoring to better monitor Medicare beneficiaries, improve health outcomes and reduce Medicare expenditures.

CORALVILLE, Iowa — A company that makes a line of dietary supplements is offering informal demonstrations on health at several Hy-Vee stores.

Pinnaclife said it would offer the demonstrations through July 21 at Hy-Vee stores in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri with Hy-Vee dietitians. The company, based in Coralville, Iowa, manufactures a mineral, vitamin and other supplements under the Olivamine brand.

“One of the most important things I learned about the retail business is that you need to change. You need to keep yourself fresh and creative, and things will work out,” said Mark Griffin, president and CEO of Lewis Drug, which currently operates more than 30 locations. “Obviously, in 70 years, things worked out well and we continue to evolve.”

Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Lewis Drug aims to be its customers’ “first stop for everything,” and the “Four Seasons” department in its newest store helps the chain fill that role.


The 4,000-sq.-ft. environmentally controlled room is a setting in which the chain can maximize its seasonal offerings throughout the year. In the winter months, Lewis kept the room at 45 degrees and displayed live Christmas trees and stands, wreathes, pine cones and twig dogwood branches, as well as shovels, snow blowers and other seasonal merchandise.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — PharmaCline has launched a topical antibiotic for prediabetes and diabetes patients that is designed to treat minor cuts, scrapes and burns.

Diabecline, the company said, is an over-the-counter antibiotic that targets the source of infection through site-specific penetration technology.

"Our Diabecline antibiotic allows users who are at greater risk of developing serious infections to achieve better care," PharmaCline CEO Steve Keough said.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Hy-Vee is the latest supermarket chain to bring a trained chef into the store to encourage customers to cook healthy food at home, according to published reports.

The Sioux Falls, S.D., Argus Leader reported Wednesday that a local Hy-Vee store had brought in chef Scott Teal to oversee food displays, demonstrate ways to prepare food and teach classes. It also gives the store a way to showcase new produce, such as brown-colored chocolate grape tomatoes.

Dakotacare will use the company’s AutoAuthRx to allow clinical pharmacists to collaborate with providers and ensure each prescription is aligned with the member’s specific benefit design and the associated evidence-based guidelines.

Ladwig, who has worked for Lewis Drug for 33 years, was selected by his peers in honor of the dedication and service he has shown toward the profession of pharmacy. The award was presented to Ladwig at the association's recent 125th Annual Convention at the Sioux Falls Convention Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — UltiMed is offering 50-count pen needles for patients with diabetes, the company announced.

The company said the needles would give diabetes patients a high-quality and cost-effective option for their pen needle supplies. Before, pen needles were dispensed in quantities of 100.

UltiMed said its needles, manufactured in its De Smet, S.D., factory, are the only ones assembled in the United States.

NEW YORK — Bills introduced in the legislatures of nearly a dozen states have pharmacy benefit managers and the generic drug industry fearing that the bills could lead to limits on doctors’ abilities to prescribe generics through e-prescribing.

The Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, the main lobby for PBMs, said the bills would prohibit doctors from seeing lower-cost drug options, including generics and preferred brands; would prevent the e-prescribing software from showing safety information; and would disallow lower-cost pharmacy options.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Hy-Vee has opened its latest store in Sioux Falls, S.D., the grocery and retail pharmacy chain said.

Hy-Vee acquired the building, formerly a Sunshine Foods store, in September as part of the same transaction that included the opening of another Sioux Falls store and a store in Windom, Minn.

The 45,000-sq.-ft. store will employ 45 former employees of Sunshine Foods.

February was a busy month for CVS Caremark. First it was a partyon Beale Street...

February was a busy month for CVS Caremark. First it was a party on Beale Street as the chain announced its entry into Memphis. A week later, it broke out the pina coladas as it cut the ribbon on its first store in Puerto Rico. In January, it was Budweiser in St. Louis.

There are just eight states in which CVS does not operate stores: Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In drug store retailing, being able to provide coverage “from sea to shining sea” means a lot when you try to sell your services to big healthcare payers.
