SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved two drugs made by GlaxoSmithKline for use together in patients with advanced melanoma that can't be removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body, the agency said Friday.

The FDA announced the new approval for Mekinist (trametinib) and Tafinlar (dabrafenib). The agency originally approved the two drugs for use as single agents for the same indication in May 2013.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Canadian regulators have approved two drugs made by GlaxoSmithKline for treating skin cancer, GSK said Wednesday.

The drug maker announced Health Canada's approval of Tafinlar (dabrafenib mesylate) and Mekinist (trametinib) in patients with melanoma that can't be removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body.

Rite Aid is partnering with the Skin Cancer Foundation for the program, which will last through July. A study published in the June edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine indicated that proper sun protection can keep skin looking younger as well as healthier.

Former National Football League Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher will work with Melanoma Exposed, an educational campaign run by the Melanoma International Foundation, Melanoma Research Alliance, Melanoma Research Foundation and the Skin Cancer Foundation, with sponsorship from drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb, the organizations announced Tuesday.
