ITASCA, Ill. — Jewel-Osco has announced that Scott Hays has been named VP operations for the Chicagoland grocery store. 

Most recently a district manager with Albertsons LLC’s Southern division, Hays will lead the operations team to support Jewel-Osco’s marketing and merchandising initiatives, including the company’s upcoming remodels and opening their five newly acquired Dominick’s locations.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Thursday announced the receipt of a request for additional information and documents from the Federal Trade Commission in connection with the FTC's review of the Safeway/Albertson's merger. 

The second request extends the waiting period imposed by the Hart−Scott−Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 until 30 days after Safeway and Albertsons have substantially complied with the second request, unless that period is extended voluntarily by the parties or terminated sooner by the FTC.

Safeway on Tuesday announced the final distribution ratio for the previously announced special stock dividend to its stockholders of all of the shares of Class B common stock of Blackhawk Network Holdings held by Safeway.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Tuesday announced the final distribution ratio for the previously announced special stock dividend to its stockholders of all of the shares of Class B common stock of Blackhawk Network Holdings held by Safeway. 

Safeway stockholders will receive 0.164291 of a share of Blackhawk Class B common stock for every share of Safeway common stock held as of the close of business on April 3, 2014.

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — In an effort to more accurately reflect the makeup of Kinney Drugs’ diverse range of pharmacy-related health care services, the company has decided to change its name to KPH Healthcare Services.

“We believe that the name change will afford each of our divisions the best opportunity to grow business within existing markets, as well as position them for expansion into new markets,” the company said in a statement sent to Drug Store News.

Robert M. Long, former president, CEO and chairman of Longs Drug Stores passed away March 27 due to complications, which occurred as a result of inclusion body myositis.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Robert M. Long, former president, CEO and chairman of Longs Drug Stores passed away March 27 due to complications, which occurred as a result of inclusion body myositis.  

Long was a well-known industry veteran having led Longs Drug Stores for more than 20 years. His retirement from the Walnut Creek, Calif.-based pharmacy retailer as CEO in 2000 marked the first time that a member of the founding family was not heading the company.

New Albertson’s has acquired five Dominick’s locations and appointed Shane Sampson, currently president of the company’s Boston-based Shaw’s Division, as president of the Jewel-Osco division based in Chicago.

ITASCA, Ill. — New Albertson’s has acquired five Dominick’s locations and appointed Shane Sampson, currently president of the company’s Boston-based Shaw’s Division, as president of the Jewel-Osco division based in Chicago. 

Sampson fills the role that had been held by interim division president Jim Rice since January 2014.

Sampson’s first project highlights the company’s commitment to investing in Chicago: Remodeling and reopening five additional former Dominick’s locations.

Following speculation that Safeway may be considering "strategic alternatives," Safeway executives during their latest conference call confirmed just that — the supermarket retailer placed itself on the sales block. Before that conference call, analysts were already putting two and two together and coming up with two viable suitors for the Safeway footprint — private investment firm Cerberus, also known as New Albertsons, and supermarket giant Kroger, which has just closed on Harris Teeter for $2.5 billion.

Cerberus is said to be the lead bidder, but Kroger shouldn't be ruled out. But what would Cerberus or Kroger be getting if they purchased Safeway outright for almost $10 billion? In addition to 1,335 locations and a $2.7 billion book of prescription business, there would be some intangibles in the deal as well — namely Safeway's relatively advanced Just for U loyalty program and a yet-to-be launched health-and-wellness platform that's supposed to evolve Safeway over the next decade from being a food retailer into being a health solutions center.

The firm noted that divestitures in a Kroger acquisition would exceed those in a Cerberus buyout.

Albertsons has confirmed that it plans to shutter 26 locations.

BOISE, Idaho — Albertsons has confirmed that it plans to shutter 26 locations.

“This is part of our typical review cycle, and after reviewing store performance, we determined that these stores could not be positioned for future profitability, with the exception of the two stores in Acme that were closed for underperformance. The two Acme stores were closed because the leases are expiring,” the company said in a statement sent to Drug Store News.
