MONTVALE, N.J. — Grocer A&P has named company COO Paul Hertz as president and CEO, effective immediately.

Hertz succeeds Sam Martin. In January, A&P confirmed Martin’s departure. Martin, a former OfficeMax executive joined A&P as CEO in July 2010, succeeding Ron Marshall, who left the company after serving less than six months at the helm.

MONTVALE, N.J. — Supermarket chain A&P, which emerged from bankruptcy in March 2012, has confirmed the departure of president and CEO Sam Martin.

“We all thank Sam for his time at A&P and wish him well in his future endeavors. The company has made tremendous headway since Greg Mays was installed as executive chairman over 14 months ago, and Mr. Mays will continue to serve as executive chairman,” the company said in a statement sent to Drug Store News.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko is the latest retailer to offer prescriptions at no upfront cost to customers who have enrolled in the new health insurance marketplaces but haven't received their identification cards.

The retail chain said Monday that it would offer supplies of prescriptions in the interim to customers who could provide proof of enrollment. The chain operates 326 stores in the Midwest, Rocky Mountain, North Central and Pacific Northwest regions.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko is opening two small-format stores in the Midwest, the chain said Thursday.

The company said it would open Shopko Hometown stores in Mayville, Wis., and Valentine, Neb., in spring 2014. The Shopko Hometown format is designed to serve smaller communities than the chain's larger store model and combines retail health services with an assortment of general merchandise, consumables and others.

A philanthropic arm of mass merchandiser Shopko is planning to donate up to $360,000 to school districts across the country.

NEW YORK — A philanthropic arm of mass merchandiser Shopko is planning to donate up to $360,000 to school districts across the country.

The Shopko Hometown Foundation, part of the Shopko Hometown division, which runs 181 small-format stores across the country, said it would donate $1 for each signature it receives from customers, for up to $2,000 per store.

The campaign, called Help Us Give Back, lasts through Dec. 24. Customers can sign their names once per day, every day through the campaign.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko is opening five new small-format stores this month, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

The retailer opened the doors Monday to three Shopko Hometown stores in Ellsworth, Wis.; St. Peter, Minn.; and Winneconne, Wis. Two more openings are planned on Nov. 11 for Afton, Wyo., and Tomahawk, Wis. Shopko operates 330 stores in the Midwest, North Central, Mountain West and Pacific Northwest regions, including — with the five new locations — 180 Shopko Hometown stores.

As part of the "Support the Cure" program, purchases of select women's activewear and accessories from West Coast Novelty Group will help support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Shopko is partnering with both for the fundraising effort.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The philanthropic arm of mass merchandise chain Shopko is donating money to fund scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Shopko Foundation announced the donation of $75,000 in $2,500 scholarships to 30 students in 10 states. The philanthropy has donated $375,000 since 2005 through its Teammate and Family Scholarship Program.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko will open five small-format stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the mass merchandise retailer said.

The five Shopko Hometown stores will be in Afton, Wyo., St. Peter, Minn., and Winneconne, Ellsworth and Tomahawk, Wis. The stores are expected to open in late fall. The Shopko Hometown format is designed to serve smaller, rural communities and augment the chain's larger stores and will total 181 out of the chain's more than 330 total stores once the new stores are completed.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Monday named Sam Duncan president and CEO. In this role he succeeds Wayne Sales, who has served as the company’s president and CEO since July 2012. The succession was first reported last month, when Supervalu announced its agreement with AB Acquisition to sell five of its retail banners as well as enter into an agreement with Symphony Investors to conduct a tender offer for up to 30% of Supervalu's outstanding common stock.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko has finished converting the 163 Pamida stores that it bought last year, the mass merchandise retail chain said Thursday.

Green Bay, Wis.-based Shopko announced plans to buy Omaha, Neb.-based Pamida in January 2012, with plans to convert Pamida stores to the Shopko Hometown format. The last 36 Pamida stores to be converted have marked their grand openings as Shopko Hometown stores.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Mass-merchandise chain Shopko has appointed a new president, the company said Friday.

Shopko announced the promotion of Jill Soltau to president and chief merchandising officer. Soltau began working for Shopko in 2007 as SVP and GMM apparel and accessories, before receiving a promotion in 2009 to EVP and chief merchandising officer. She previously worked for retailers such as Sears and Kohl's.

Last week in a much anticipated move, Cerberus Capital Management acquired 877 supermarkets from Supervalu for $100 million in cash and the assumption of $3.2 billion in debt. Also part of the deal, a Cerberus-led investor consortium will provide the remaining Supervalu business an influx with the purchase of up to 30% of Supervalu stock at a purchase price of $4 per share.

Following the transaction, Supervalu will be a $17 billion business comprised mostly of its distribution business, which will represent 47% of revenues, Save-A-Lot (25%) and 191 regional supermarkets (28%).

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Mass merchandise chain Shopko's philanthropic arm is donating nearly $1 million to charity organizations.

The Shopko Foundation announced Monday that it would donate $981,000 to its four grant programs: Community Charitable Grants, Green Bay Area Grants, Teammate Community Service Grants and Teammate and Family Scholarships.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko announced Wednesday that Mike Bettiga has been named interim CEO to replace Paul Jones, who resigned to pursue another opportunity.

Bettiga is a 35-veteran of the company and most recently served as EVP and COO, a role he has held since April 2009. He began his career with Shopko as a pharmacist in 1977, and has held a number of positions during his tenure, including executive leadership of store, pharmacy and optical operations, retail health merchandising and responsibility for the Shopko Express stores.

Shopko said Tom Abbott's new title is SVP product development/general merchandise manager of consumables. In this expanded role, Abbott will retain responsibility for product development, trend and sourcing. His previous oversight of the company's textiles division will move to Shopko's newly hired SVP/GMM home and hardlines, Craig Gourley, creating one senior merchant leader and vision for the home division.
