GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko will open five small-format stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the mass merchandise retailer said.

The five Shopko Hometown stores will be in Afton, Wyo., St. Peter, Minn., and Winneconne, Ellsworth and Tomahawk, Wis. The stores are expected to open in late fall. The Shopko Hometown format is designed to serve smaller, rural communities and augment the chain's larger stores and will total 181 out of the chain's more than 330 total stores once the new stores are completed.

The 325-store retailer announced the appointment of Michael Cooper, who will report to Shopko president and chief merchandising officer Jill Soltau.

When Supervalu announced this past summer a review of strategic alternatives, its goals were to improve its business, better position the company for the future and create the best opportunity to deliver shareholder value. This effort has led to the sale of 877 stores to AB Acquistion.

Following the sale, Supervalu will consist of its wholesaler business, which serves 1,950 stores across the country; Save-A-Lot with approximately 1,300 stores across 35 states; and Supervalu's regional retail food banners Cub, Farm Fresh, Shoppers, Shop 'n Save and Hornbacher's.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Customers refill more than 1,000 prescriptions per day using Shopko's mobile pharmacy app, the mass-merchandise retailer said Tuesday.

The app, created by San Francisco-based scripts, allows customers to refill prescriptions, receive pickup and dosage reminders and get a complete view of their health information.

Supervalu on Monday named Sam Duncan president and CEO.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Monday named Sam Duncan president and CEO. In this role he succeeds Wayne Sales, who has served as the company’s president and CEO since July 2012. The succession was first reported last month, when Supervalu announced its agreement with AB Acquisition to sell five of its retail banners as well as enter into an agreement with Symphony Investors to conduct a tender offer for up to 30% of Supervalu's outstanding common stock.

Shopko has finished converting the 163 Pamida stores that it bought last year, the mass merchandise retail chain said.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko has finished converting the 163 Pamida stores that it bought last year, the mass merchandise retail chain said Thursday.

Green Bay, Wis.-based Shopko announced plans to buy Omaha, Neb.-based Pamida in January 2012, with plans to convert Pamida stores to the Shopko Hometown format. The last 36 Pamida stores to be converted have marked their grand openings as Shopko Hometown stores.

Mass-merchandise chain Shopko has appointed a new president, the company said.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Mass-merchandise chain Shopko has appointed a new president, the company said Friday.

Shopko announced the promotion of Jill Soltau to president and chief merchandising officer. Soltau began working for Shopko in 2007 as SVP and GMM apparel and accessories, before receiving a promotion in 2009 to EVP and chief merchandising officer. She previously worked for retailers such as Sears and Kohl's.

Last week in a much anticipated move, Cerberus Capital Management acquired 877 supermarkets from Supervalu for $100 million in cash and the assumption of $3.2 billion in debt. Also part of the deal, a Cerberus-led investor consortium will provide the remaining Supervalu business an influx with the purchase of up to 30% of Supervalu stock at a purchase price of $4 per share.

Following the transaction, Supervalu will be a $17 billion business comprised mostly of its distribution business, which will represent 47% of revenues, Save-A-Lot (25%) and 191 regional supermarkets (28%).

In a move that will reunite all Albertsons stores under one operator, Supervalu on Thursday morning announced a definitive agreement under which it will sell 877 stores across the Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market banners and related Osco and Sav-on in-store pharmacies to AB Acquisition, an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management, in a transaction valued at $3.3 billion.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Mass merchandise chain Shopko's philanthropic arm is donating nearly $1 million to charity organizations.

The Shopko Foundation announced Monday that it would donate $981,000 to its four grant programs: Community Charitable Grants, Green Bay Area Grants, Teammate Community Service Grants and Teammate and Family Scholarships.

Shopko announced Wednesday that Mike Bettiga has been named interim CEO to replace Paul Jones, who resigned to pursue another opportunity.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko announced Wednesday that Mike Bettiga has been named interim CEO to replace Paul Jones, who resigned to pursue another opportunity.

Bettiga is a 35-veteran of the company and most recently served as EVP and COO, a role he has held since April 2009. He began his career with Shopko as a pharmacist in 1977, and has held a number of positions during his tenure, including executive leadership of store, pharmacy and optical operations, retail health merchandising and responsibility for the Shopko Express stores.

Shopko said Tom Abbott's new title is SVP product development/general merchandise manager of consumables. In this expanded role, Abbott will retain responsibility for product development, trend and sourcing. His previous oversight of the company's textiles division will move to Shopko's newly hired SVP/GMM home and hardlines, Craig Gourley, creating one senior merchant leader and vision for the home division.

Shopko said Craig Gourley will serve as its new SVP and general merchandise manager of home and hardlines. Gourley will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of merchandising for the home division, including developing strategies, negotiation of vendor partnerships and managing the buying team. The combined entity will retain the Shopko name. Shopko will be headquartered in Green Bay and Pamida’s corporate headquarters in Omaha, Neb., will be consolidated into the Green Bay office over the next several months.
