The fact that the online grassroots campaign by independent pharmacy operators has enlisted more than 12,000 patients in just six weeks since its launch is important because it clearly demonstrates that people believe in the value of pharmacy. It is a powerful statement as government and payers wrestle with health reform, and the future role of pharmacy hangs in the balance.

This effort by pharmacy leaders to enlist patients in their ongoing drive for recognition and respect is a key part of the effort to influence policy.

TRICARE’s pharmacy benefit covers more than 9 million active duty members of the military, retirees and their families.

What a difference a year makes. Walgreens’ management and shareholders were long accustomed to steady, record-breaking gains in sales and earnings, and a pedal-to-the-metal store development strategy, that made Walgreens the nation’s fastest-growing pharmacy retailer and a market leader in cities across the country. As recently as the company’s annual meeting in January 2008, former chairman and CEO Jeff Rein reaffirmed that strategy, outlining a bold plan for filling in markets across the country by opening roughly one new store every 16 hours and buying the prescription files, and sometimes the stores, of rival independent and small chain pharmacies. He also said the company aggressively would pursue new opportunities in specialty pharmacy and front-end merchandising.

Why not? I did. I stole every idea from Health and Human Services secretary Mike Leavitt, CMS acting administrator Kerry Weems, Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri and a few others earlier this month in Boston at the National E-prescribing Conference, hosted by CMS and some 34 other co-sponsors, including NACDS and NCPA. The two-day event focused on the potential electronic prescribing has to help fix so much of what is wrong with health care in America today.
