Schnuck Markets is enhancing the security of its computer network, the Midwestern supermarket chain said.

ST. LOUIS — Schnuck Markets is enhancing the security of its computer network, the Midwestern supermarket chain said Monday.

Schnucks said the upgrades would not affect the operation of its stores, but that people sending emails to the company might experience delays.

The enhancement comes about two months after a cyberattack announced at the end of March in which the company's payment card system was compromised. The company reported finding computer codes that captured the magnetic stripe data on the backs of credit and debit cards.

Saying that it had "found and contained" the issue behind the attack, Schnucks said that a computer code discovered by an outside computer forensic firm had been designed to capture magnetic stripe data on the back of cards.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Schnuck Markets is opening a stand-alone pharmacy at a hospital in Illinois with an emphasis on specialty pharmacy services, the supermarket operator said.

Schnucks said the 2,000-sq.-ft. pharmacy at the pavilion of St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill., would be its first stand-alone specialty pharmacy in Illinois, specializing in such conditions as HIV, hepatitis, autoimmune disorders, organ transplants and cancers. The pharmacy replaces the specialty pharmacy at a nearby store, though the store's traditional pharmacy will remain.

What-A-Ya Nuts?! was launched in the St. Louis market last year by Howie Sher, a fourth-generation former supermarket owner, who sought to create a brand that touted better-for-you snacking alternatives. The line What-A-Ya Nuts?! line features four varieties, including Jalapeño Hysteria, Maple Cinnamon Madness, Cracked Parmesan Pepper and Stark Raving Chocolate, and currently is available at Schnucks, along with other St. Louis-area supermarkets and specialty and convenience shops.

Tom Thumb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger, on Friday announced its purchase of seven convenience stores in the Memphis area currently operated by Schnuck Markets.

MEMPHIS — The Memphis-based Kroger Delta Division, a division of Kroger on Friday announced its purchase of eight Memphis-area Schnucks stores. In addition, Kroger has acquired seven convenience stores that will be remodeled under the Kwik Shop banner and will be operated by Tom Thumb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kroger. The Schnucks grocery stores will be converted and re-opened under the Kroger name over the next few weeks.

TAMPA — Not Your Mother's hair care line launched in 2010 in a few hundred Walmart stores as a test. Now, the brand is celebrating a successful first year with broadened distribution at retail.

Following its test run at Walmart, the brand now is available in 1,500 Walmart locations. In March 2011, Ulta brought in the line to all of its nearly 400 locations. Also carrying the collection are several regional retailers, such as Lowes Foods, Schnucks, King Kullen, Hi-School Pharmacy, Navarro Discount Pharmacy, Dierbergs, Acme Fresh Markets and Bag n Save.

On top of its 101 in-store pharmacies, Schnucks last year opened four specialty pharmacies, offering specialized services to patients.


The pharmacies offer services for patients living with such chronic conditions as HIV, cancer, multiple sclerosis and autoimmune diseases, as well as for people recovering from organ transplants, said company spokesman Paul Simon. “It’s for patients who require special attention and hard-to-source medication,” he added.

ST. LOUIS — Supermarket chain Schnucks Markets is partnering with produce wholesaler Frieda’s to educate shoppers about citrus fruits.

The retailer said all of its Schnucks and Logli stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi would host Frieda’s Produce University, an eight-hour, open-house-style event on Saturday that will feature staff to teach shoppers how to prepare and eat various citrus fruits and free samples. The session will cover exotic varieties, such as Meyer lemons, pomelos, blood oranges and kumquats.

ST. LOUIS — Supermarket chain Schnuck Markets has appointed a new VP marketing, the company said Thursday.

Robert Howard previously worked for such companies as Kellogg, Kraft, Chiquita Brands, Luxottica Retail, Tyson Foods and Perfetti Van Melle.

At Schnuck’s, Howard will be in charge of advertising, marketing services, consumer research, food education and private brand development. He will report to president and COO Todd Schnuck.
