Pharmacy same-store sales, which included an approximate 138 basis points negative impact from new generic introductions, increased 3.1%.

Canadian pharmacy retailer Shoppers Drug Mart posted an increase in fourth-quarter sales driven by gains at the front end and strength in prescription count growth.

TORONTO — Canadian pharmacy retailer Shoppers Drug Mart posted an increase in fourth-quarter sales driven by gains at the front end and strength in prescription count growth. The company also noted that it is gearing up for an expansion of its enhanced beautyBOUTIQUE during 2014.

Sales for the quarter were Canadian $2.75 billion, an increase of 0.9% compared with the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased 1.2% during the quarter.

Rite Aid's January same-store sales increased 1.8%, beating out an analyst projection of a 0.5% increase in overall comparable-store sales. Total drug store sales for the four weeks ended Jan. 25 increased 1.5% to $1.9 billion.

Family Dollar reported sales of $2.5 billion in first quarter 2014, a 3.2% increase over the same period last year, the dollar store chain said.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar reported sales of $2.5 billion in first quarter 2014, a 3.2% increase over the same period last year, the dollar store chain said Thursday.

For the 13-week quarter that ended Nov. 30, the chain said sales were strongest in refrigerated and frozen food, health aids and tobacco. Same-store sales during the quarter decreased by 2.8% due to fewer customer transactions and a slight decrease in average customer transaction value.

Calendar day shifts positively impacted total comparable sales by 170 basis points, while generic drug introductions in the last 12 months negatively impacted total comparable sales by 70 basis points. December 2013 had one additional Tuesday and one fewer Saturday compared with December 2012.

Rite Aid reported a 2.9% increase in same-store sales for the month of December, the retail pharmacy chain said Friday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid reported a 2.9% increase in same-store sales for the month of December, the retail pharmacy chain said Friday.

For the four-week period that ended Saturday, front-end same-store sales increased by 1%, while pharmacy same-store sales increased by 4.1%, including a 1% negative effect from the introduction of new generic drugs. Meanwhile, a decrease in sales of flu shots and prescription flu drugs resulted in a 2% decrease in same-store script count.

Total sales were $2.109 billion, an increase of 2.7% over December 2012.

It's a feat that Kroger achieved despite the slow economic recovery. "The resiliency of our Customer First strategy … was on full display during the quarter, even as our internal research shows that customers remain uncertain about the economy," Dave Dillon, Kroger chairman and CEO, told analysts Thursday morning.

Rite Aid's same-store sales increased by 2.8% in November, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid's same-store sales increased by 2.8% in November, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

The increase included a 0.4% increase in front-end same-store sales and a 3.9% increase in pharmacy same-store sales, offset by 0.81% due to new generic drugs, which can reduce sales because of their lower price, but are good for a pharmacy retailer's margins. Same-store scripts increased by 0.1%.

Total sales for November were $2.434 billion, a 1.6% increase compared with the same period last year.

Walgreens on Wednesday reported November sales of $6.1 billion, an increase of 4.1% for the same month in fiscal 2013.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Wednesday reported November sales of $6.1 billion, an increase of 4.1% for the same month in fiscal 2013.

Total front-end sales increased 3.2%, while comparable store front-end sales increased 1.9%. Customer traffic in comparable stores increased 0.8% and basket size increased 1.1%.

The company said that a meaningful increase versus prior quarters in promotional investment contributed to the improvement in traffic and comparable store front-end sales for November and throughout the quarter.

Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased by 5.7% in October and increased 6.2% on a calendar day-shift adjusted basis. This year’s October had one additional Thursday and one fewer Monday compared with October 2012. These calendar shifts negatively impacted prescriptions filled at comparable stores by 50 basis points.

Grocer Harris Teeter posted an increase in fiscal 2013 sales and same-store sales.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Grocer Harris Teeter posted an increase in fiscal 2013 sales and same-store sales.

For fiscal 2013, sales rose 3.8% to $4.71 billion from $4.54 billion in the year-ago period. Same-store sales for the year increased 2.23%.

Fourth quarter sales rose 4.5% to $1.19 billion from $1.14 billion in the year-ago period. The increase in sales was fueled by an increase in same-store sales and sales from new stores, partially offset by store closings. Same-store sales increased 1.49% for the quarter.

Fred's sales increased to $177.3 million in September, the discount store chain said Thursday.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Fred's sales increased to $177.3 million in September, the discount store chain said Thursday.

The Memphis, Tenn.-based company, which operates 702 stores in the South, said the monthly sales figures represented a 4% increase over September 2012. Same-store sales increased by 2.8%, compared with a 3.8% decrease last year.

For the year to date, sales were $1.3 billion, a 1% increase over $1.3 billion during the same period last year. Same-store sales increased by 0.8%, compared with a 1.2% decrease last year.

Dollar General on Wednesday posted net sales of $4.4 billion for the second quarter ended Aug. 2, up 11.3%.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General on Wednesday posted net sales of $4.4 billion for the second quarter ended Aug. 2, up 11.3%. 

“Dollar General delivered another solid quarter. Our same-store sales growth for the second quarter of 2013 accelerated to 5.1%," stated Rick Dreiling, Dollar General chairman and CEO. "We are very pleased with the increase in customer traffic in our stores. We continue to grow our market share and believe that our second-quarter results position us well to deliver our financial outlook for the year."

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid had another month of positive sales growth in July, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

Rite Aid said same-store sales for the four-week period that ended last Saturday increased by 1.3% compared with the same period last year. The increase included a 0.7% increase in front-end same-store sales and a 1.6% increase in pharmacy same-store sales. Same-store scripts increased by 0.4%. Total sales for the month were $1.898 billion, a 0.9% increase over $1.881 billion last year.

99 Cents Only Stores posted a net sales increase of 8.9% to $1.7 billion for fiscal 2013.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only Stores on Wednesday posted a net sales increase of 8.9% to $1.7 billion for fiscal 2013.  Same-store sales, calculated on a comparable 52-week period, increased 4.3%.  

During the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013, the dollar store operator opened seven stores in California and now operates 316 stores, an increase of 6% in store count over last year.

Costco Wholesale reported sales of $9.9 billion for the month of July, an 8% increase over July 2012, the club retailer said.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco Wholesale Corp. reported sales of $9.9 billion for the month of July, an 8% increase over July 2012, the club retailer said Thursday.

For the 44-week period that ended Sunday, sales were $87.05 billion, also an 8% increase over the same period last year. For the month and the 44-week period, same-store sales rose 6%.

Sterne Agee analyst Chuck Grom said that not counting the effects of foreign exchange rates and gas prices, the company's total same-store sales increased by 6.25%, higher than the firm's 5% forecast.

Sales for the quarter ended May 4 rose about 23% to $582.7 million, compared with $474.1 million in the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased 6.7%, including the impact of e-commerce sales.
