ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco announced on Thursday that its March sales increased 8% to $10.43 billion.

This year's five-week period, ended April 6, included 35 days of sales compared to 34 last year, reflecting the timing of Easter. This calendar shift positively impacted this year's net and comparable sales by an estimated 1 to 1.5%, the company stated.

During March, same-store sales rose 6% in the United States. For the total company, same-store sales increased 5% during that period.

Costco on Thursday reported net sales of $8 billion for the four weeks ended Feb. 2, representing an increase of 6% percent from the similar four-week period last year.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco on Thursday reported net sales of $8 billion for the four weeks ended Feb. 2, representing an increase of 6% percent from the similar four-week period last year. 

Comparable store sales across Costco's U.S. store base were up 5%.

For the 22 weeks ended Feb. 2, Costco reported net sales of $46.3 billion, representing a similar increase of 6% vs. the year-ago period.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar reported sales of $2.5 billion in first quarter 2014, a 3.2% increase over the same period last year, the dollar store chain said Thursday.

For the 13-week quarter that ended Nov. 30, the chain said sales were strongest in refrigerated and frozen food, health aids and tobacco. Same-store sales during the quarter decreased by 2.8% due to fewer customer transactions and a slight decrease in average customer transaction value.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close Aug. 31, were not disclosed. The companies stated that the acquisition will have no impact on the day-to-day operations of either company.

Amerisource credited the lift to a 16% increase in AmerisourceBergen Drug Corp. revenue and a 5% increase in AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group revenue.

Family Dollar Stores on Wednesday reported a net sales increase of 9% to $2.6 billion for third quarter ended June 1, reaching the upper end of the discount chain's guidance. Comparable store sales in the quarter increased 2.9%.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores on Wednesday reported a net sales increase of 9% to $2.6 billion for third quarter ended June 1, reaching the upper end of the discount chain's guidance. Comparable store sales in the quarter increased 2.9%.

Family Dollar attributed the increase in comparable store sales to an increase in the average customer transaction value and higher customer traffic. Sales were strongest in the consumables category, which increased 14.8% during the quarter, driven primarily by strong growth in food, health and beauty aids and tobacco.

WASHINGTON — Consumer packaged goods companies and retailers that sell their products have managed to stay strong despite economic difficulty, according to a new report.

The 2013 financial performance report, "Growth Strategies: Unlocking the Power of the Consumer," conducted by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and PwC, found that despite overall slowing net sales growth rates in 2012, food, beverage and household product companies had respective sales growth of 7%, 5.5% and 3.2%.

Weis Markets on Tuesday reported net income of $82.5 million for the 52-week period ended Dec. 29.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Tuesday reported net income of $82.5 million for the 52-week period ended Dec. 29. Even with one less week of sales, that's up 9.2% versus fiscal 2011, which was a 53-week period, the grocer noted. Sales were down slightly by 1.9% to $2.7 billion compared with the week-longer year-ago period. Comparable sales were down 2%. 

Adjusting for the 52-week to 53-week comparison, the grocer's 2012 net income increased 13.9% while sales and comparable store sales were flat.
