Retailers, suppliers make Fortune top-100 workplace list

Fortune magazine has released its list of the 100 best companies to work for this year, and a number of retailers and suppliers made the cut.

NEW YORK — Fortune magazine has released its list of the 100 best companies to work for this year, and a number of retailers and suppliers made the cut.

Among retailers, Wegman's Food Markets came in at fifth place, with 8.3% job growth. Nugget Market, a supermarket chain based in Sacramento, Calif., ranked 37th; Whole Foods ranked 71st; and Publix Super Markets ranked 77th.

Among suppliers, Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, ranked 20th; Genentech ranked 36th; and Novo Nordisk ranked 48th. Confectionary manufacturer Mars ranked 95th.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Cardinal Health honored the owner of a Sacramento, Calif.-based independent pharmacy with the company's Ken Wurster Community Leadership Award during its annual Retail Business Conference.

Frank Cable, owner of South Sacramento Pharmacy for more than 40 years, received the award, which each year honors a retail independent pharmacist who promotes the ideals of community pharmacy. The award was created in honor of Tampa, Fla., independent pharmacist Ken Wurster, who passed away in 2008 and was highly regarded for his commitment to serving his customers.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores and California pharmacy groups have banded together to urge the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to prevent the implementation of a state plan amendment — proposed by the California Department of Health Care Services — which they say would place significant limitations on access to pharmacy care and services for the state’s Medi-Cal patients.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California state officials tentatively are blocked from moving forward with a 10% Medi-Cal reimbursement rate cut.

The court decision, handed down by Judge Christina Snyder, was applauded by several organizations, including the California Medical Association, the California Dental Association, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the California Association of Medical Product Suppliers, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the American Medical Response.

The California State Senate Health Committee on Wednesday tabled a bill that would require a prescription for the purchase of a pseudoephedrine product, exempting children's liquid formulations.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California State Senate Health Committee on Wednesday tabled a bill that would require a prescription for the purchase of a pseudoephedrine product, exempting children's liquid formulations.

The bill initially failed to pass the committee by a vote of 2-2 with five no-votes. Subsequently, the committee placed the bill up for reconsideration by a vote of 7-0 with two no-votes. No subsequent hearing date has been posted the Senate's website.

The "One Million More" flu shot campaign aims to increase the year-over-year influenza vaccination rate by 1 million immunizations by donating communication materials to flu shot administrators so that they can educate patients about the importance and ease of getting a flu shot.

Fresh & Easy is slated to open its first six stores in the Sacramento region in 2012.

The stores will include three in Sacramento, one in Lincoln, one in Elk Grove and one in Folsom. The chain, which has opened 13 stores in northern California this year, opened a store in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco last week.

The Tylenol poisonings, in which someone placed potassium cyanide in with the pain relievers on store shelves, prompted the introduction of tamper-proof packaging for many over-the-counter medicines.
