NEW YORK — The University of Utah's College of Pharmacy has opened a new research organization designed to encourage collaboration and interaction, according to published reports.

The Salt Lake City-based Deseret News reported on the opening of the L.S. Skaggs Pharmacy Institute, a 150,000-sq.-ft. facility that includes open lab space.

SALT LAKE CITY — Zarbee's on Tuesday noted that more consumers have gravitated toward natural solutions over allopathic medicines, at least through the end of December, citing Nielsen scan data. 

For the 12 weeks ended Dec. 31, supplemental immune system boosters and homeopathic cough and cold medicines were up 13%, Zarbee's reported. The trend is even more pronounced across children's remedies with allopathic medicines declining 15% in the 12 week period while sales of pediatric natural solutions were up 19%, and now make up more than 20% of the category.

SALT LAKE CITY — Zarbee's has boosted its portfolio of all-natural cough products to include an extra-strength line.

Designed for those ages 12 years and older, the over-the-counter extra-strength all-natural cough products will supplement the existing line of Zarbee's original cough products, which currently are available for children ages 12 months and older. The new extra-strength products are specially formulated at a higher strength and dose than the original children's product, Zarbee's said.

SALT LAKE CITY — Schiff Nutrition International is scheduled to change its NYSE ticker symbol and, effective June 11, the stock will begin trading under the symbol SHF.

SALT LAKE CITY — Zarbee's on Wednesday announced the launch of Zarbee's Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink, an over-the-counter nighttime cough remedy.

Zarbee's Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink is made from antioxidant-rich buckwheat honey, which recent clinical studies have shown is more effective at relieving coughs associated with colds and upper respiratory illnesses than dextromethorphan or diphenhydramine, the company claimed.

That’s what Schiff Nutrition director, president and CEO Tarang Amin told analysts during a conference call Thursday — only four months into his tenure — regarding the predominant industry practice of funding buy-one-get-one promotions for glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.

SALT LAKE CITY — Schiff Nutrition on Wednesday named Jennifer Steeves-Kiss SVP and chief marketing officer. Steeves-Kiss joins Schiff from Procter & Gamble, where for almost two decades she helped build premium brands.

“We continue to implement our strategy to build a world-class nutritional supplements company by strengthening the leadership talent of our management team,” Schiff Nutrition president and CEO Tarang Amin said.

SALT LAKE CITY — Watson Pharmaceuticals plans to expand its manufacturing and research and development plant in Salt Lake City, the drug maker said.

The $44 million expansion of the plant will include retrofitting about 20,000 sq. ft. of space and the construction of about 17,000 additional sq. ft. The expansion of the plant, which makes transdermal patches and topical gels, is expected to include the addition of about 300 new employees over the next three to five years.
