Dollar General increased net sales by 8.5% to $4.2 billion for its first quarter ended May 3, the dollar operator reported Tuesday.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General increased net sales by 8.5% to $4.2 billion for its first quarter ended May 3, the dollar operator reported Tuesday. 

“For the quarter, we achieved same-store sales growth of 2.6%, reflecting strong growth in our consumables categories offset by softer sales in seasonal and weather-sensitive categories,” stated Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “We believe the continued strength in consumables is a sign of the underlying health of our business.”

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General is adding 635 new stores and relocating 550 this year, the dollar store chain said.

"Dollar General's continued growth reflects our customers' increasing satisfaction with our everyday low prices and convenience," Dollar General chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling said. "Further, 2013 will mark another growth milestone as we plan to open the organization's 11,000th store before the year's end when we will begin our 75th anniversary in 2014."

“No frills, just real savings” and “Simple prices you can add up in your head” make clear that Dollar General’s goal is to provide great prices on household essentials.


At first blush, there appears to be nothing special about Dollar General’s first Southern California store in the suburb of Montclair. It occupies about 7,500 sq. ft. of space in an aging strip center, and a small banner hung on the exterior beckons to passing motorists and pedestrians, “Now Open.” Inside, more signs explain the bare-bones merchandising of familiar brands to shoppers unfamiliar with the Dollar General value proposition.

A former Safeway executive has joined Dollar General as its EVP store operations.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — A former Safeway executive has joined Dollar General as its EVP store operations.

Effective March 19, Greg Sparks will assume all responsibilities for the operations of more than 9,900 retail stores in 38 states and serve on Dollar General's real estate and store development committee, the company said. Sparks will report to chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling.

Sparks most recently served as president of Safeway's Seattle division. His departure from the supermarket retailer was announced earlier this week.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General results showed that low-end consumers have some spending power and a taste for its brand of discount retail.

Sales increased 11.2% to $3.58 billion at the company’s 9,641 stores, while same-store sales increased 5.9% and net income increased 25% to $181 million, excluding nonrecurring charges related to the early repayment of debt. On that same basis, earnings per share increased to 52 cents, four cents better than analysts expected and nearly 24% higher than the prior-year profit of 42 cents.
