HYDERABAD, India — Dr. Reddy's has launched a drug for treating acne, the company said Friday.

The Indian generic drug maker announced the launch of Zenatane (isotretinoin) capsules in the 20-mg and 40-mg strengths. The drug is a therapeutically equivalent generic version of Roche's Accutane. The Food and Drug Administration also approved the drug in the 10-mg strength.

Various versions of the drug had sales of about $309 million during the 12-month period that ended in January, according to IMS Health.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Valeant Pharmaceuticals has bought rights to a drug used to treat skin cancer from Eisai, the companies said Thursday.

Valeant has bought the rights to Targretin (bexarotene) capsules and gel from Eisai for $65 million upfront, plus additional payments based on certain milestones. Under the deal, Eisai has transferred its regulatory approval application to Valeant, which will assume responsibilities for all regulatory obligations associated with the product in the United States. Eisai will retain rights to the drug outside the United States.

PRINCETON, N.J. — Ranbaxy Labs has launched a new treatment for acne under a licensing agreement with a Canadian drug maker.

Ranbaxy announced Monday the launch of Absorbica (isotretinoin) capsules for treating severe recalcitrant nodular acne in patients ages 12 years and older. The drug was launched under a license from Mississauga, Ontario-based Cipher Pharmaceuticals.

Normally, oral isotretinoin must be taken with a high-fat meal due to its chemical properties, but Absorbica is designed to be taken without food.

NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new treatment for acne made by a GlaxoSmithKline subsidiary.

Stiefel announced the approval of Fabior (tazarotene) foam in the 0.1% strength, calling it the only retinoid in a topical foam for treating acne in patients ages 12 years and older.

"Stiefel is dedicated to meeting th needs of patients and dermatologists, and we believe Fabior foam will be an important treatment option for people with moderate-to-severe acne," Stiefel VP North America dermatology Jean-Christophe May said.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Food and Drug Administration has accepted the first regulatory approval application for a generic version of a cancer drug made by Eisai.

Banner Pharmacaps announced Tuesday that it had filed for regulatory approval of generic bexarotene gelatin capsules in the 75-mg strength, a generic version of Eisai's Targretin, used to treat cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, or CTCL skin cancer. Under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, once the drug is approved, Banner will be the exclusive supplier of a generic version of Targretin for 180 days.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — GlaxoSmithKline company Stiefel announced it is seeking approval for a facial acne treatment in patients ages 12 years and older.

Stiefel said it has submitted a new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration for tazarotene foam. Tazarotene foam is subject to evaluation and approval by the regulatory authorities before it can be made available to physicians for prescribing to their appropriate patients, Stiefel said.
