WASHINGTON — A survey released by the National Retail Federation and conducted by BIGInsight found that the average parent will spend $688.62 on back-to-school items this year, compared with $603.63 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $30.3 billion.

NRF cited an increased number of children entering elementary and middle school this fall, as well as necessary back-to-school replenishments after last year’s cutbacks, for the predicted improvements.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Aisle411, a mobile retail navigation service, on Tuesday announced that its virtual mapping and navigation smartphone application is available to use in all of Walgreens' 7,907 drug stores nationwide.

With Aisle411's in-store mapping platform, customers can use their smartphones to view maps of any Walgreens store, allowing shoppers to locate products down to a particular section of each aisle. Walgreens is the first national retailer with all of its stores mapped in a mobile application, Aisle411 stated.

Integrated communications have the most impact because earned, owned and paid media reinforce and amplify the message. All channels feed off each other; the more frequently a potential customer sees or hears about a brand or retailer, particularly in more than one context or venue, the more likely she is to remember and purchase.

PARIS — It seems that shoppers worldwide expect a seamless integration across online, social media, mobile and physical stores, according to a new global report released by Capgemini.

"Digital Shopper Relevancy," which surveyed 16,000 digital shoppers across 16 developing and mature markets, found that 60% of respondents said they expect the convergence of retail channels by 2014, while more than half of those surveyed said most retailers currently are inconsistent in the way they present themselves across channels.

Remember when retail transactions were completed based only on the assortment found within the confines of a brick-and-mortar store? Truth is, we may never return to those days.

I’ve heard arguments that as a result of retail choices, formats and virtual storefronts, consumers will no longer establish relationships with retailers. As a result, loyalty will be lost.

Honestly, I disagree. Multi-channel retailing not only has the potential to enhance the shopping experience, but also the ability to strengthen relationships with patrons.

The study, dubbed “Beauty and the Beast,” examined the shopping behaviors of consumers and the implications of retailers and beauty brands. The findings are based on survey responses from 1,381 participants across 50 U.S. states and Canada.

According to a National Retail Federation release on Wednesday, May retail sales (excluding automobile, gas stations and restaurants) decreased 0.3% seasonally adjusted from April but increased 4.8% unadjusted year over year, marking 23 consecutive months of retail sales growth.

NEW YORK — Consumers' preference to shop in stores, online or via mobile can depend on such factors as reliability, convenience and safety, according to recent Nielsen research.

Online purchasing was rated the overall favorite by 59% of respondents surveyed and also was considered easiest and most convenient way to shop (both 68%). On the other hand, in-store shopping was considered the most reliable and safest option (69% and 77%, respectively) when compared with online and mobile shopping.

LOS ANGELES — Most shoppers plan to spend the same amount of money for Father's Day as they did for Mother's Day, a new PriceGrabber survey revealed.

Polling 4,450 U.S. online shopping consumers, the survey found that 70% of shoppers plan to show Dad equal love this year, with 57% planning to spend less than $100 on gifts, 21% planning to spend between $100 and $249, 11% planning to spend more than $249 and an additional 11% saying they have no set budget when purchasing Father's Day gifts this year.
