MILWAUKEE — Carma Labs, the maker of Carmex lip balm products, has expanded its skin care line with the new Carmex Healing Lotion in a 13-oz. pump.

With the addition of the new 13-oz. lotion pump, and other trial and travel sizes now available, Carma Laboratories has developed its skin care line into multiple product sizes. The suggested retail price for the new pump is $10.99.

As part of the changes, the role of chief marketing officer will be eliminated. As a result, Kim Feil will be leaving the company effective Sept. 30.

DEERFIELD, Ill — Drug Store News has learned that Walgreens is reorganizing its merchandising and marketing leadership teams to better align the “strategic objectives” and to enhance the integration of those teams, according to a statement from the company.
 
As part of the reorganization, the role of chief marketing officer will be eliminated, and as a result, Kim Feil will be leaving the company effective Sept. 30.

NEW YORK — Longtime CVS/pharmacy executive Mike Bloom has resigned from the company and will serve as president and COO of Family Dollar Stores.

“Mike Bloom, EVP of merchandising and supply chain, has resigned from the company. We thank him for his many contributions to the success of our retail business over the past 19 years and wish him luck in his future endeavors,” stated Carolyn Castel, VP of corporate communications at CVS Caremark, in a statement sent to Drug Store News.

All told, Express Scripts represents $5.3 billion in revenue to Walgreens, but the Chicago-based pharmacy is working toward retaining the prescription business from several employers and payers, "consistent with their contractual obligations," executives emphasized.

The company’s retail & distribution practice expects total holiday sales to reach between $873 and $877 billion, representing a 2.5 to 3% increase over last season.

CHICAGO — Amid economic uncertainty and low consumer confidence levels, retail CFOs are expecting a 3% increase in total 2011 sales, according to a recent survey by BDO USA.

While the number reflects the study’s most optimistic sales forecast since 2007, it is down from the 4.7% sales increase reported by the Commerce Department in 2010.

The Southern California-based supermarket chain said that Dan Meyer, a 41-year company veteran, has been promoted to the newly created role of SVP retail operations. In this capacity, Meyer will be responsible for the retail operations of all 167 Stater Bros. stores, as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Training Center. Meyer will report to George Frahm, EVP retail operations and administration.

PITTSBURGH — A report commissioned by the Generic Pharmaceutical Association has drawn applause from manufacturers and a retail pharmacy industry group.

Generic drug maker Mylan, a member of the GPhA, praised the report, conducted by market research firm IMS Health, showing that the use of generic prescription drugs saved consumers, patients and healthcare providers more than $931 billion over the last decade.

With distribution within Walmart, the total number of retail locations carrying the Orabrush tongue cleaner is now more than 10,000 throughout the world, the manufacturer stated.

ShopperTrak said its 3% holiday sales increase prediction follows 19 consecutive months of year-over-year U.S. retail sales growth, adding that the expected increase is moderate when compared with the 2010 holiday season's 4.1% sales increase over 2009.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, an Endo Pharmaceuticals subsidiary, issued a voluntary, nationwide recall of multiple lots of oral contraceptives at the retail level.

Qualitest said it recalled lots of the following birth control pills due to a packaging error, whereby select blisters were rotated 180 degrees within the card, reversing the weekly tablet orientation and making the lot number and expiry date no longer visible. This error, the drug maker said, could leave women without adequate contraception and at risk for unintended pregnancy:

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is teaming up with OptumHealth to become the first to provide "virtual clinics" in a retail pharmacy setting.

Rite Aid announced Thursday the launch of NowClinic online care services at select Rite Aid stores in the Detroit area. NowClinic allows Rite Aid customers to interact in real time with doctors and OptumHealth nurses.
