Generic drug maker Mylan has entered an agreement with Hoffmann La Roche concerning its version of an oral chemotherapy drug.

PITTSBURGH — Generic drug maker Mylan has entered an agreement with Hoffmann La Roche concerning its version of an oral chemotherapy drug.

Mylan announced Wednesday that it had entered a settlement and license agreement with Hoffmann La Roche resolving a patent infringement lawsuit over Xeloda (capecitabine) tablets, a drug used to treat breast and colorectal cancers that have spread to other parts of the body.

Profits for Endo Pharmaceutical Holdings rose to $54.6 million during second quarter 2011, up 6% from $51.5 million in second quarter 2010, the drug maker said.

CHADDS FORD, Pa. — Profits for Endo Pharmaceutical Holdings rose to $54.6 million during second quarter 2011, up 6% from $51.5 million in second quarter 2010, the drug maker said.

Sales for the quarter were $607.5 million, compared with $396.5 million in second quarter 2010. Sales of branded drugs were $398.3 million, an 8% increase over last year, which the company attributed to better sales of the pain drug Opana ER and the joint pain drug Voltaren Gel.

Par Pharmaceutical had sales of $224.2 million and profits of $9.05 million during second quarter 2011, the drug maker said Wednesday.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Par Pharmaceutical had sales of $224.2 million and profits of $9.05 million during second quarter 2011, the drug maker said Wednesday.

These compared with respective sales and second-quarter profits of $255.5 million and $18.4 million in second quarter 2010.

For the first six months of fiscal year 2011, the company had sales of $435.8 million and a loss of $99.9 million, compared with $537 million in sales and profits of $44.7 million during the first six months of 2010.

NEW YORK — A U.S. drug maker and its Japanese partner have started a late-stage clinical trial of a drug for treating elevated phosphate levels in the body, the two announced Monday.

Keryx Biopharmaceuticals and Torii Pharmaceutical, the pharmaceuticals subsidiary of Japan Tobacco, started a phase-3 trial of Zerenex (ferric citrate) in Japan for patients with hyperphosphatemia. The drug also is in phase-3 trials in the United States as a treatment for hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis.

NEW YORK — Late-stage clinical trial data for a Keryx Biopharmaceuticals drug to treat kidney disease will be presented at a medical conference in Las Vegas.

Keryx said Monday that phase-3 data for the drug Zerenex (ferric citrate), a drug for abnormally high phosphate levels in patients with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis, will be presented at the upcoming National Kidney Foundation spring clinical meetings in April.

The company announced “positive” results from a phase-3 trial of the drug in November.

NEW YORK — Healthcare market research firm IMS Health will buy privately held market research firm SDI Health, IMS said.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but the deal would bring together two of the leading healthcare analytics companies. In terms of drug industry analytics, IMS focuses on drug sales and dispensed prescriptions, while SDI provides data on prescriptions written by physicians and other prescribers.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — Drug maker Merck and drug industry services organization Parexel International will work together to develop biosimilars, the two said Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Parexel will give Merck BioVentures access to clinical and regulatory services for the development of biosimilars. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. Watson Pharmaceuticals biotech subsidiary Eden Biodesign has signed a manufacturing agreement with Dutch biotech company Crucell that will give Watson access to Crucell’s cell line technology, the two companies announced Wednesday.

 

Under the agreement, Eden will provide process development and current good manufacturing practice services using Crucell’s PER.C6 technology to licensees using the technology to develop vaccines and gene therapies.

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. Earnings per share for AmerisourceBergen rose nearly 14% during the fourth quarter ended Sept. 30, thanks to key growth in two sectors, the pharmaceutical services company said.

Diluted earnings per share were 50 cents for the quarter, a 13.6% increase compared with the year-ago period. Revenue also increased to a record $19.7 billion, a 5.3% gain for the company.

BASEL, Switzerland Swiss drug maker Roche has bought the rights to an investigative treatment for hepatitis C, Roche said.

 

The company announced Thursday that it had purchased global development and commercialization rights to the drug RG7227/ITMN-191 (danoprevir) from InterMune for $175 million.

 

 

Roche said the drug had shown promise in preclinical and early clinical development. The two companies have been developing the drug since 2006.
