CHICAGO — Natural may just be the new normal in the African-American hair care market as sales of relaxers continue to decline, according to new research from Mintel.

According to Mintel, relaxers account for just 21% of African-American hair care sales and the sector has declined 26% since 2008 and 15% since 2011 when sales reached $179 million — the only category not to see growth.

CHICAGO — AFAM Concept, the makers of Hawaiian Silky, has named celebrity Nicole Suarez as the brand ambassador for its Hawaiian Silky Moroccan Argan Oil hair care line.

Suarez is a model, reality TV star and correspondent for Univision who placed third in 2011 for the popular model competition Nuestra Belleza Latina ("Our Latin Beauty"). Suarez was crowned Srta. Tolima in May of 2010, allowing her to compete for a chance at the Miss Universe pageant, in an event televised in 29 countries across the world.

According to SymphonyIRI Group, sales of hair styling gel/mousse slipped about 1.5% during the 12 weeks ended July 8 at food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart). During the same period, sales of women’s hair coloring dropped 4.6%, and hair relaxer kits were 
down 12.5%. The double-digit drop in hair relaxer kits comes as little surprise as many ethnic beauty shoppers are choosing to 
go natural.

The trend is evident in looking at sales of hair relaxer kits at food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart). According to SymphonyIRI Group, sales of hair relaxer kits slipped more than 7% for the 52 weeks ended Oct. 30.

The company also is using the launch of Ultra Care to lead the ethnic hair care market in producing an environmentally responsible product that uses eco-friendly resins and recyclable packaging.

Ultra Care is made with a moisture blend complex, which features a blend of castor, coconut and avocado oils to battle dryness and hair breakage.
