The proton-pump inhibitor will not come in a chewable form, however, and will feature the message "Swallow — Do Not Chew" prominently on its packaging.

ZUG, Switzerland — A Swiss drug maker is acquiring the U.S. rights for several GlaxoSmithKline drugs.

Covis Pharma Sarl announced Thursday that it had acquired the rights to the antibiotic Fortaz (ceftazidime), the antibiotic Zinacef (cefuroxime), the heart arrhythmia drug Lanoxin (digoxin), the antidepressant Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate) and the gastroesophogeal reflux disease drug Zantac (ranitidine hydrochloride). GSK will retain rights to the drugs outside the United States.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Perrigo on Monday announced that it has received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug application for over-the-counter ranitidine 150 (regular and cool mint), a generic version of Zantac 150.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo on Monday announced that it has received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug application for over-the-counter ranitidine 150 (regular and cool mint), a generic version of Zantac 150.

Zantac 150 has annual sales of approximately $110 million, as measured by SymphonyIRI Group, Perrigo reported.

Hi-Tech Pharmacal was granted final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its treatment of duodenal ulcers.

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. — Hi-Tech Pharmacal was granted final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its treatment of duodenal ulcers.

The drug maker said its abbreviated new drug application for ranitidine syrup in the 15-mg/mL strength was approved. Ranitidine syrup is a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline’s Zantac syrup, which garnered sales of $21 million for 12 months ended in December 2010, according to IMS sales data.

Hi-Tech currently has 13 products awaiting approval at the FDA, the company said.
