The Consumer Healthcare Products Association on Tuesday applauded Tennessee state Rep. Tony Shipley, R-Kingsport, after his legislation — H.B. 1257 — passed out of the Tennessee House of Representatives.

WASHINGTON — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association on Tuesday applauded Tennessee state Rep. Tony Shipley, R-Kingsport, after his legislation — H.B. 1257 — passed out of the Tennessee House of Representatives. The bill, which passed the Senate last week, would implement a real-time, drug offender block list in Tennessee. 

The measure now heads to Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam for his signature.

The West Virginia Senate on Tuesday voted 25-to-9 to make pseudoephedrine a Schedule IV prescription drug and exempt medicines that can’t easily be diverted to methamphetamine, according to published reports.

A similar bill is being considered by the West Virginia House of Delegates.

According to reports, the two exceptions to the prescription-only requirement would include Acura Pharmaceuticals' Nexafed and Westport Pharmaceuticals' Zephrex-D.

According to the report, the bill would allow an exception for certain over-the-counter drugs that are deemed "tamper resistant" by the Board of Pharmacy.

Fruth Pharmacy is seeing a positive response from customers in its efforts to limit the sale of OTC cold and allergy medications that contain pseudoephedrine, according to published reports.

NEW YORK — Fruth Pharmacy is seeing a positive response from customers in its efforts to limit the sale of OTC cold and allergy medications that contain pseudoephedrine, according to published reports.

The West Virginia MetroNews Network reported that Fruth had sold nearly 1,000 boxes of Acura Pharmaceuticals' Nexafed, a nasal decongestant that contains tamper-resistant properties to limit its appeal to makers of methamphetamine, and the product has been popular with customers since its introduction at the stores in August.

NEW YORK — Rite Aid has stopped selling some cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine at its stores in West Virginia, according to published reports.

The Charleston, W.Va., Gazette reported that the chain would stop selling medicines that have pseudoephedrine as their only active ingredient, such as Sudafed 12 Hour and Sudafed 24 Hour, though they would continue selling products that combine pseudoephedrine with other ingredients like antihistamines and painkillers.

MISSION, Kan. — ScriptPro's Central Pharmacy Management System Point of Sale can now interface with a real-time system for tracking and controlling OTC products that can be used to manufacture methamphetamine.

ScriptPro said its system now interfaces with the Appriss National Precursor Log Exchange system, currently used by pharmacies and law enforcement agencies in 22 states to track products like pseudoephedrine-based cold and allergy remedies. ScriptPro said the interface eliminates the need to keep a manual log to document sales of the products.

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Fruth Pharmacy on Friday announced their commitment to replace medications containing pseudoephedrine, a nonprescription decongestant that can be used in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine, with Nexafed, a PSE product formulated with Impede technology that disrupts the extraction and conversion of PSE to meth.

Currently, medications with 30 mg of PSE will be replaced with other mg amounts being replaced as soon as possible, the 27-store chain stated.

ST. LOUIS — Westport Pharmaceuticals on Wednesday announced findings from independent testing of their meth-resistant pseudoephedrine product, Zephrex-D. The specially formulated pseudoephedrine product helps make it impractical and nearly impossible to illicitly manufacture methamphetamine.

According to the January 2013 "General Accounting Office Report," more than 87% of domestic meth labs utilize the One Pot meth-making method. Testing demonstrates that meth cannot be produced from Zephrex-D using this popular One Pot method.
