PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Friday announced that its stores raised $10.3 million during the company's annual Prostate Cancer Awareness campaign.

For the 13th consecutive year, Safeway's entire chain of more than 1,600 stores dedicated a month to raising money and increasing awareness for the fight against prostate cancer, which currently affects more than two million American men and remains the second-leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for enlarged prostate made by generic drug maker Wockhardt, the company said.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for enlarged prostate made by generic drug maker Wockhardt, the company said.

Wockhardt, based in Mumbai, India, announced the approval of alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 10-mg strength, which is designed to treat enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The drug is a generic version of Sanofi's Uroxatral. Various versions of the drug have sales of about $81.5 million, according to IMS Health.

INDIANAPOLIS — A drug made by Eli Lilly & Co. produced "significant" improvements in patients with erectile dysfunction who also had benign prostatic hyperplasia, according to results of a new study.

The phase-3 study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that Cialis (tadalafil) improved erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia in men with both conditions. BPH is a condition in which the prostate enlarges, causing urinary symptoms.

Men who took 400 international units of vitamin E daily had more prostate cancers compared with men who took a placebo, according to an updated review of data from the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial, the NIH stated.

The FDA approved Cialis (tadalafil) as a once-daily treatment for men with erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as BPH, as well as for BPH alone. BPH is a condition in which the prostate enlarges, which can cause urinary symptoms.

The company filed an abbreviated new drug application to market dutasteride capsules in the 0.5-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Avodart, which is made by GlaxoSmithKline.

WASHINGTON — A branded drug made by Watson Pharmaceuticals reduced symptoms in men with prostate disease, according to results of a mid-stage clinical trial.

Data from the phase-2 study of the drug Rapaflo (silodosin) presented at the American Urological Association’s annual meeting showed that it reduced symptoms and improved outcomes in men with chronic prostatitis/pelvic pain syndrome, also known as CP/CPPS.

SEATTLE — The Food and Drug Administration has approved biotech company Dendreon’s expansion of manufacturing capacity for an immunotherapy treatment for prostate cancer, Dendreon said Thursday.

The company said it would be able to increase the ability of Provenge (sipuleucel-T) manufactured at its plant in New Jersey by increasing the number of workstations to produce it from 12 to 48.

The treatment is designed to induce an immune response against prostatic acid phosphatase, an antigen present in most prostate cancers.
