The Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board will begin certifying specialty pharmacists who pass a comprehensive exam in October. The exam is designed to cover the entire specialty pharmacy process, including intake, clinical management, fulfillment and outcomes.

The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy, which oversees the SPCB, is bringing to bear some real advocacy and structure to the highly fragmented specialty pharmacy marketplace. The DSN Group, including its specialty pharmacy publication of the same name Specialty Pharmacy, applauds these efforts.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is making changes to its certification program that it said would advance pharmacy tech certifications, the group announced.

WASHINGTON — The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is making changes to its certification program that it said would advance pharmacy tech certifications, the group announced.

The PTCB said that over the next seven years, it would phase in the changes, which include mandatory background checks, accredited education requirements and changes in acceptable continuing education programs for recertification. The group said its requirements have remained largely unchanged since its 1995 founding.

WASHINGTON — A new organization aims to be an independent group to certify specialty pharmacists.

The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy and the Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board each formed as the result of a decision to create an independent certification board. Originally, the certification board would have been an entity within a professional organization granted autonomy in making decisions regarding certification.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Tuesday the launch of the Educator Program, which educators can join by completing an online application to become "advocate educators."

WASHINGTON — The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced the update of the pharmacy technician certification exam blueprint.

While much of the PTCE's content remains unchanged, the PTCB said the blueprint has been reorganized into nine domains, called "knowledge areas," each with a number of sub-domains. This organization gives the new blueprint a knowledge focus and conveys more information about the type and amount of content in the exam. The "knowledge areas" are:

WASHINGTON — An organization that certifies pharmacy technicians is starting a program designed to encourage more technicians to get certified.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Tuesday the launch of the Employer Partnership Program, which it said was for retail and health-system pharmacies that want to encourage technicians to participate in the PTCB certification program. North Carolina regional chain Kerr Drug already has joined the program, according to PTCB.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas is launching a certification program for pharmacy technicians, the school said.

The university's Professional Development Center, part of its Division of Continuing and Innovative Education, will begin classes in February. Students in the 14-week program, which includes a 120-hour internship at a local pharmacy, will learn the skills needed to work as pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

WASHINGTON — The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is partnering with American Greetings to promote Pharmacy Technician Day on Tuesday, the PTCB said.

The two developed an interactive e-card that people can send to pharmacy technicians to show their appreciation.

The PTCB also gave some ideas about how pharmacies can celebrate their technicians, including breakfast buffets, luncheons and dessert receptions; PTCB gear presented as tokens of appreciation; letters of appreciation; banners and others.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Thursday that executive director and CEO Melissa Murer Corrigan would serve as the 2011 president of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and be installed at the ICE Annual Education Conference in Atlanta, which also took place Thursday. ICE provides educational, networking and advocacy resources for credentialing organizations.
