MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy, a Hispanic-owned pharmacy retailer and an MBF Healthcare portfolio company, unveiled its private-label line, Vida Mia, at the Private Label Manufacturers Association Annual Trade Show in Chicago.

Navarro participated in the Latino Markets section of the show, displaying the new Hispanic-oriented store brand products from retailers. The 2011 theme of the show, which ran from Nov. 13 to 15, was "It’s a Store Brands World."

Sentinel Capital Partners has acquired Sarasota, Fla.-based WellSpring Pharmaceutical, the private equity firm said Monday.

NEW YORK — Sentinel Capital Partners has acquired Sarasota, Fla.-based WellSpring Pharmaceutical, the private equity firm said Monday.

Sentinel, which describes itself as investing in lower middle-market companies, said it bought the manufacturer of prescription and OTC drugs, which manufactures its products in Ontario, alongside Ancor Capital Partners. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

WESTON, Fla. — American Scientific Resources has received a private-label purchase order for a Shoppers Drug Mart VeraTemp noncontact thermometer.

The initial order for 5,000 units will supply VeraTemp to Shoppers Drug Mart’s chain of almost 1,200 Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix stores across Canada.

NOVI, Mich. — Supermarket chain Brookshire Bros. gave its Private Label Vendor of the Year Award to the Chain Drug Marketing Association, CDMA said Tuesday.

Brookshire Bros. nonfood category manager Doug Barnett presented the award to CDMA president James Devine and director of store brands Susan Barry.

Brookshire Bros. operates 72 supermarkets in the Houston metropolitan area and rural areas of Texas.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday named Jeffrey Kang and Mike Ellis to its pharmacy, health and wellness division.

Kang will join Walgreens Oct. 31 as SVP health and wellness services and solutions, reporting to both president and CEO Greg Wasson and president of pharmacy, health and wellness Kermit Crawford.

In addition, Mike Ellis has joined Walgreens as VP specialty pharmacy and infusion, reporting to Crawford.

Prior to joining the Emerson Group, Karvonen was a product development manager at CVS/pharmacy, where she developed private-label beauty and personal care products. In her first year, she developed more than 160 private-label products and was responsible for supply chain and logistics for the private-label beauty and personal care categories.

Certain plans under Medicare are utilizing a new prepaid card of sorts to allow members to pay for their OTC medicines. Medicaid administrators, meanwhile, are employing that same card to incentivize healthier behavior among its members.
