WASHINGTON While there is a need to modernize the regulatory structure of the cosmetics industry, the newly proposed Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 as written "is not based on credible and established scientific principles" and would place an "enormous, if not impossible, burden on the Food and Drug Administration," the Personal Care Products Council stated in response to the legislation introduced on Wednesday.

NEW YORK Sun care brand Coppertone has developed an iPhone application to help consumers stay sun safe.

With the Coppertone MyUVAlert app, consumers can get local UV index forecasts, custom sunscreen reapplication reminders, individualized product recommendations, coupons and sun protection tips.

The custom reapplication reminders allow for more frequent reminders when swimming or sweating and can be set based on activity or personal preferences.

WASHINGTON —A new report by activist group Campaign for Safe Cosmetics alleging that a number of popular brand-name perfumes and teen body sprays have “secret” chemicals that could be harmful to consumers is “erroneous” and “does a disservice to consumers,” stated John Bailey, chief scientist of the Personal Care Products Council, in response to the claim.

IRVING, Texas —Kimberly Clark is betting hygiene-conscious consumers are ready for single-use bathroom hand towels. The company has introduced Kleenex hand towels, disposable bathroom hand towels in a pop-up dispenser delivery system. The dispenser can be set upright on the bathroom vanity or hung upside on the towel rack.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for hand-washing recommend drying with a single-use towel—and Kimberly Clark’s sheets, which are free of inks, dyes and fragrance, are a first-of-their-kind solution.
