During this year’s tour, volunteer dermatologists detected 788 suspected pre-cancers and cancers, including 29 suspected melanomas.

Flu vaccination coverage in children increased dramatically during the last season, with smaller increases in coverage among adults, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

WASHINGTON — Flu vaccination coverage in children increased dramatically during the last season, with smaller increases in coverage among adults, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report, the CDC said this week that coverage for children aged 6 months through 17 years during the 2012-2013 season was 56.6%, a 5.1% increase from the 2011-2012 season. Coverage among adults was up by 2.7%, at 41.5%. Some gaps were seen between rates on a state-by-state basis.

SWIFTWATER, Pa. — Sanofi's vaccines division is targeting people who have not received vaccinations against flu this season in an effort to encourage them to do so.

Sanofi Pasteur announced Thursday the launch of its "The FLUgitives" campaign. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual flu vaccinations for everyone ages 6 months and older, but according to the CDC, about 20% of the population gets the flu each year, while 226,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications.

Bartell Drugs has started its annual flu vaccination program, the Seattle-based retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs has started its annual flu vaccination program, the Seattle-based retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

Bartell said it would offer in-store vaccinations at its 61 stores and an off-site flu clinic program for businesses and retirement communities. Pharmacists can give vaccinations to anyone ages 5 years and older without appointment, though customers younger than 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu vaccinations every year for everyone ages 6 months and older.

A study published by the Annals of Family Medicine found that 30.5% of adults seeking vaccinations did so during the evening (17.4%), on the weekend (10.2%) or on a holiday (2.9%), such as Columbus Day or Veterans Day.

The study also found that the patients who most likely received vaccinations during these times were younger (less than 65 years old), male, residing in urban areas and without chronic conditions — groups with historically lower vaccination rates.

While rates of human papillomavirus infection among girls ages 14 years to 19 years have dropped by half since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started recommending routine vaccination against it seven years ago, rates of vaccination have not increased, the agency said.

According to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, HPV vaccination coverage for girls did not increase over last year. The survey included vaccination records of about 19,000 teenagers.

The study, conducted by Kaiser Permanente and published in the American Journal of Public Health, was based on electronic health records of more than 250,000 boys aged 9 to 17 enrolled in the Kaiser Permanente Southern California health plan.
