JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries will launch the generic version of Xeloda (capecitabine) tablets, 150 mg and 500 mg, in the United States. The drug is used to treat cancers that have metastasized.

Xeloda tablets, 150 mg and 500 mg had annual sales in the United States of approximately $754 million as of December 2013, according to IMS.

The supermarket pharmacy is advertising the service as a cheaper alternative to the prices paid at the veterinarian for the same canine/feline pharmaceuticals. Using Heartgard Plus Chew as an example, Wegmans noted that the common vet pricing is $50.20. Wegmans sells the same prescription for $44.99 and a generic equivalent for $19.99.

Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted $157.5 million in sales, representing a decline of 1%, for the four weeks ended March 1.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted $157.5 million in sales, representing a decline of 1%, for the four weeks ended March 1. Comparable store sales for the month decreased 2.2% compared with a decrease of 1.5% in the prior-year period.

“In the pharmacy department, we will continue to accelerate new pharmacy acquisitions and focus on our plan for EIRIS Health Services, Fred's specialty pharmacy unit, which is experiencing solid script and sales growth in this fast-expanding segment of the pharmacy industry," noted Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO.

SAN FRANCISCO — Grand View Research projects that the global mHealth market will reach well in excess of $20 billion from a base of $2 billion in 2012, as part of a recent market research study. Between 2014 and 2020, the firm estimates a CAGR of 47.6%. 

In 2012, monitoring services represented the largest segment, accounting for about 63% of the overall market share. Monitoring services include independent aging solutions, chronic disease management and post acute care services, as well as devices such as body trackers that are employed to monitor vital signs.

Rite Aid on Thursday posted a 1.5% increase in same-store sales for the five weeks ended March 1.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid on Thursday posted a 1.5% increase in same-store sales for the five weeks ended March 1. February front-end same-store sales decreased 1.8%, of which 0.5% was attributable to a decrease in sales of flu-related over-the-counter products. Pharmacy same-store sales, which included an approximate 138 basis points negative impact from new generic introductions, increased 3.1%.

Lupin on Thursday announced that it received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for both its doxycycline capsules and its ciprofloxacin for oral suspension.

MUMBAI and BALTIMORE — Lupin on Thursday announced that it received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its doxycycline capsules USP, 50 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg, which is the generic version of Aqua Pharmaceuticals' Monodox capsules. The drug is used to treat infections caused by various microorganisms and as an adjunctive therapy in severe acne, according to the company.

LIVERPOOL, England — Study results announced Thursday by Novo Nordisk and collaborative partners found that participation in diabetes education is associated with a greater sense of well-being and the ability to self-manage diabetes.

However, more than three-quarters of people with diabetes in the United Kingdom (78%) have never attended a diabetes education program, and family members are rarely included (79%). Additionally, only 14% of healthcare professionals say that all their patients with diabetes are offered structured diabetes education classes.

Most people who abuse prescription opioid drugs get them for free from a friend or relative — but those at highest risk of overdose are as likely to get them from a doctor’s prescription, Centers for Disease Control researchers reported Monday in a research letter, “Sources of Prescription Opioid Pain Relievers by Frequency of Past-Year Nonmedical Use: United States, 2008-2011,” in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine.

Dr. Reddy's Labs announced the launch of moxifloxacin hydrochloride tablets — the generic version of Avelox tablets — in 400-mg form.

HYDERABAD, India — Dr. Reddy's Labs announced the launch of moxifloxacin hydrochloride tablets, the generic version of Avelox tablets, in 400-mg form. The drug is available in bottle counts of 30.

Avelox tablets had U.S. sales of approximately $195 million for the 12 months ending in December 2013, according to IMS Health.

Drug Channels on Tuesday sized up the specialty pharmacy market. Last year specialty drugs accounted for 22% of all pharmacy revenue, and 63% of the specialty business is dispensed by three companies: Express Scripts, CVS Caremark and Walgreens.

MINNEAPOLIS — Norwest Equity Partners on Monday announced that it has acquired Apothecary Products from Terry Noble, founder and CEO of Apothecary. The transaction closed Feb. 28, 2014; financial terms were not disclosed.

Apothecary offers its customers a one-stop-shop solution with both over-the-counter consumer health products and behind-the-counter pharmacy supplies, spanning across three categories, including pharmacy supply, medication management and home health care.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced that it received approval for generic Evista (raloxifene) tablets, 60-mg, in the United States.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries on Tuesday announced that it received approval for generic Evista (raloxifene) tablets, 60-mg, in the United States. The company was the first to file, which means the product is eligible for 180 days of marketing exclusivity. Teva will begin shipping the drug within the next 30 days.

Evista 60-mg tablets, marketed by Eli Lilly and Co., had annual sales in the United States of approximately $824 million as of December 2013, according to IMS data. The drug is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
