Sun Pharma on Sunday announced it will acquire 100% of Ranbaxy in an all-stock transaction valued at $4 billion.

MUMBAI, India — Sun Pharma on Sunday announced it will acquire 100% of Ranbaxy in an all-stock transaction valued at $4 billion. 

The combination of Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy creates the fifth-largest specialty generics company in the world and the largest pharmaceutical company in India, Sun Pharma stated. The combined entity will have operations in 65 countries, 47 manufacturing facilities across five continents, and a significant platform of specialty and generic products marketed globally, including 629 abbreviated new drug applications.

IMS Health Holdings on Thursday announced the pricing of its initial public offering of 65 million shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $20 per share, including 52 million shares to be sold by IMS Health and 13 million shares to be sold by selling shareholders.

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy recommended that pharmacies no longer dispense combination drugs containing more than 325 mg of acetaminophen per dosage unit in light of recent regulatory action.

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. — The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy on Wednesday recommended that pharmacies no longer dispense combination drugs containing more than 325 mg of acetaminophen per dosage unit in light of recent regulatory action.  

NABP also advises that pharmacists consult with prescribers to discuss alternative products with lower acetaminophen doses.

LAKE MARY, Fla. — Axium Healthcare Pharmacy announced that it will begin to dispense Otezla, the new oral therapy for the treatment of adults with active psoriatic arthritis. Axium is one of a limited number of specialty pharmacies selected by drug manufacturer Celgene to dispense Otezla, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on March 21.

MannKind Corp. on Tuesday announced that the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration voted 13-to-1 to recommend that Afrezza (insulin human [rDNA origin]) inhalation powder be granted marketing approval by the FDA to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 1 diabetes and voted 14-to-0 to recommend that Afrezza be granted marketing approval by the FDA to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced on Thursday that VP of state government affairs Sandra Guckian has been named chair of the associate member advisory committee of the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations for 2014-2015.

In Guckian’s new role, she will be responsible for facilitating communications within and between NASPA’s state pharmacy association members and associate members, which includes trade associations, such as NACDS, and other pharmacy stakeholder companies and organizations.

Rite Aid on Thursday posted $1.9 billion in sales for the four weeks ended March 29, up 0.4%.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid on Thursday posted $1.9 billion in sales for the four weeks ended March 29, up 0.4%. 

Same-store sales increased 0.7% over the prior-year period. March front-end same store sales decreased 5%, with 4.1% of the decrease attributable to a shift in the timing of Easter, which falls on April 20 this year compared to March 31 last year.

Walgreens on Thursday reported March sales of $6.4 billion, an increase of 4.5% as compared with the same month in fiscal 2013.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Thursday reported March sales of $6.4 billion, an increase of 4.5% as compared with the same month in fiscal 2013.

With Easter falling on April 20 this year compared with March 31 last year, total front-end sales decreased 2.6% in March compared with the same month in fiscal 2013, while comparable store front-end sales decreased 3.4%. Customer traffic in comparable stores decreased 4% while basket size increased 0.6%. Walgreens will report combined comparable store sales for March and April with its April sales results.

Robert M. Long, former president, CEO and chairman of Longs Drug Stores passed away March 27 due to complications, which occurred as a result of inclusion body myositis.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Robert M. Long, former president, CEO and chairman of Longs Drug Stores passed away March 27 due to complications, which occurred as a result of inclusion body myositis.  

Long was a well-known industry veteran having led Longs Drug Stores for more than 20 years. His retirement from the Walnut Creek, Calif.-based pharmacy retailer as CEO in 2000 marked the first time that a member of the founding family was not heading the company.

Symphony Health Solutions on Wednesday released research on the affects of the Affordable Care Act on Medicaid drug spending.

HORSHAM, Pa. — Symphony Health Solutions on Wednesday released research on the affects of the Affordable Care Act on Medicaid drug spending.

The research found that prescription claims for Medicaid patients increased in January by 10% and in February by 14% over the same periods last year. The study also uncovered that average out-of-pocket cost for contraceptives has dropped more than 58% since 2012.

Publix and Walgreens have partnered with a local coalition to collect expired medications, according to a report in the Delray Beach newspaper the Pineapple published Monday.

Beginning in April, every pharmacy in Publix and Walgreens stores in Palm Beach County will display signs with the location of the nearest pill drop-box as part of Operation Pill Drop.

PRINCETON, N.J. — Sandoz on Tuesday announced the U.S. market introduction of its calcipotriene and betamethasone dipropionate ointment, the first generic version of Leo Pharma’s Taclonex Ointment.

Calcipotriene and betamethasone dipropionate ointment is a vitamin D analogue and corticosteroid combination product indicated for the topical treatment of psoriasis vulgaris in adults 18 years and older.

Psoriasis affects approximately 2% of the U.S. population. Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of the condition.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceuticals on Tuesday announced the introduction and availability of Raloxifene hydrochloride tablets, USP. This product is AB rated and bioequivalent to Evista tablets.  

Raloxifene hydrochloride tablets, USP are indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. 

Teva was first to file, making the product eligible for 180 days of marketing exclusivity.

At this time, Avella is one of a select number of pharmacies that are contracted by Celgene, the drug manufacturer, to dispense the product at launch.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Topamax (topiramate) for prevention of migraine headaches in adolescents ages 12 years to 17 years.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Topamax (topiramate) for prevention of migraine headaches in adolescents ages 12 years to 17 years. This is the first FDA approval of a drug for migraine prevention in this age group. 

The medication is taken on a daily basis to reduce the frequency of migraine headaches.

Topamax was first approved by the FDA in 1996 to prevent seizures. It was approved for migraine prevention in adults in 2004.
