WASHINGTON — Medication safety and pharmacy information systems get more attention in the latest version of an exam for pharmacy technicians.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Friday updates to the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, based on the group's Job Analysis Study, which involves more than 25,000 pharmacy technicians from across the country and from different practice settings. The updated exam has nine knowledge groups known as domains, rather than three.

A U.S. Air Force master sergeant has been named the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's Certified Pharmacy Technician of the Year, the PTCB said.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Air Force master sergeant has been named the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's Certified Pharmacy Technician of the Year, the PTCB said.

The PTCB announced that master sergeant Jessica Hughes, the non-commissioned officer in charge of pharmacy support at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, in New Jersey, was selected as the PTCB CPhT of the Year. The finalists also included Rico Powell and Linda Henson.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board has issued more than half a million certifications, the group said Wednesday.

WASHINGTON — The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board has issued more than half a million certifications, the group said Wednesday.

The PTCB said the number of certifications it had granted was 503,620 as of June 30. Last year alone, 39,729 candidates passed the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center recently partnered with Walgreens to offer a free bedside delivery program for patients to receive prescriptions before being discharged.  

If a patient would like to take advantage of beside delivery, the bedside nurse and/or any member of the care team sends a referral to a pharmacy technician who will go to the bedside and discuss the option with the patient. They will then start the process of delivering their prescription order when they are ready for discharge.

WASHINGTON — The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board will introduce its updated certification examination later this year, the group said Thursday.

The PTCB said the updated exam, scheduled for introduction on Nov. 1, would measure the knowledge pharmacy techs need to effectively support pharmacists and advance patient safety. Candidates can take the updated exam if they apply on or after Nov. 1.

WASHINGTON — The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is making changes to its certification program that it said would advance pharmacy tech certifications, the group announced.

The PTCB said that over the next seven years, it would phase in the changes, which include mandatory background checks, accredited education requirements and changes in acceptable continuing education programs for recertification. The group said its requirements have remained largely unchanged since its 1995 founding.

With the Supreme Court’s ruling on healthcare reform, the luxury of looking back shows that the National Association of Chain Drug Stores and allies took the right course to battle the pharmacy Medicaid cuts of the Deficit Reduction Act. What we learned should inspire pharmacy to remain tenacious in its continued advocacy on this issue and in confronting all other challenges.

Quick, easy and (mostly) painless. This trend in retail medical claiming, or covering and billing for medical benefits at the pharmacy, is quickly spreading to other products and services, and is largely expanding the scope of convenient, clinical care options for both the patient and the pharmacy.

A group that certifies pharmacy technicians has introduced a program for pharmacy tech educational institutions and training programs that provide classroom instruction, position students for employment and prepare them to participate in its national certification program.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Tuesday the launch of the Educator Program, which educators can join by completing an online application to become "advocate educators."
