WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has a new president-elect, the group said Thursday.

The APhA announced the election of Matthew Osterhaus, who will succeed Steven Simenson at the conclusion of the 2014 APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, Fla., on March 31, 2014. Osterhaus is the co-owner of Osterhaus Pharmacy in Maquoketa, Iowa, and an APhA trustee.

Eight pharmacy students have won scholarships worth $12,000, according to a group that calls itself the country's largest group purchasing organization for independent pharmacies.

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Eight pharmacy students have won scholarships worth $12,000, according to a group that calls itself the country's largest group purchasing organization for independent pharmacies.

The Independent Pharmacy Cooperative announced that the students were awarded scholarships of $1,500 each. The recipients of the scholarships, handed out at the IPC's 2012 Member Conference in Savannah, Ga., were awarded based on an essay competition. Matching funding came from McKesson.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation on Thursday announced the 2012-2013 inaugural class for the foundation’s Faculty Scholars Program. 

Launched earlier this year, the Faculty Scholars Program is designed to educate assistant professors from U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy about designing, implementing and publishing community-pharmacy-based patient care research. Educational programming was designed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, under the leadership of Melissa Somma McGivney.

The doctor of pharmacy program at Marshall University has received a preliminary accreditation status that the university said was a step toward full accreditation.

Marshall president Stephen Kopp said Wednesday the program had received precandidate accreditation status from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education's board of directors.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy is extending its doctor of pharmacy program to span seven years.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis College of Pharmacy is extending its doctor of pharmacy program to span seven years.

Beginning in the 2014 academic year, the program — which currently is six years for students — will allow students to achieve a bachelor of science degree after four academic years and also will provide opportunities for electives and time for patient-centered and interprofessional initiatives, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

Manchester College has tapped Dave McFadden to serve as the dean of the university's pharmacy school.

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. — Manchester College has tapped Dave McFadden to serve as the dean of the university's pharmacy school.

McFadden, who has served as interim dean for the past five months, has more than 20 years of higher education leadership experience and has led enrollment, strategic planning and marketing initiatives, as well as the name change to University scheduled for July 1 at Manchester College, the school said.

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. — Manchester College is looking for a new leader for its pharmacy school, the private university's president said Tuesday.

The school's vice president and founding dean, Philip Medon, has resigned for health-related reasons, prompting the university to launch a nationwide search for a new dean. Medon joined the school last year. The school currently has 23 faculty and offers a four-year professional doctoral program. Classes are set to begin in August 2012.

The university announced the appointment of Naushad M. Khan Ghilzai as the founding dean of the school, which will be at the university's Los Angeles campus. Ghilzai most recently served as associate dean for faculty at LECOM School of Pharmacy in Erie, Pa., and in Bradenton, Fla.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The charitable arm of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores awarded $320,000 in scholarships through its 2011 Pharmacy Partners Scholarship Program.

The NACDS Foundation said its scholarship program provides awards ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 to each pharmacy school’s scholarship fund to assist pharmacy students working to achieve their professional doctorate degree in pharmacy. This year, the NACDS Foundation provided scholarship assistance to each of the 124 accredited pharmacy schools and colleges in the nation.

NEW YORK — Long Island University’s Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences celebrated its 125th anniversary with a founding day celebration Thursday.

The college, originally founded as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1886, has graduated more than 20,000 students. The celebration included special presentations and a cake made by master baker and host of the TLC reality show “Cake Boss,” Bartolo Valastro.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The dean of the Kansas University School of Pharmacy has won an award in recognition for service to the elderly, according to published reports.

The Lawrence Journal World reported Monday that dean Ken Audus had won the Douglas County Senior Center’s Seaver Award.

The article noted that the school has started many programs for local residents, such as health fairs and free bone-density screenings.
