Long Island University's Brooklyn, N.Y., campus has given C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries owner Ian Ginsberg its Distinguished Alumnus Award, the university said.

NEW YORK — Long Island University's Brooklyn, N.Y., campus has given C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries owner Ian Ginsberg its Distinguished Alumnus Award, the university said.

Ginsberg received the award at the campus' commencement ceremony at Barclays Center Thursday. 

A 1985 graduate of the university's pharmacy school and third-generation pharmacist, Ginsberg is also the chairman of the Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors.

The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy has launched an online resource with clinical and business-related content in more than 20 therapeutic categories, the group said Thursday.

TAMPA, Fla. — The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy has launched an online resource with clinical and business-related content in more than 20 therapeutic categories, the group said Thursday.

The Specialty Pharmacy Education Center provides 30 hours worth of content for members of the organization, including preparation for the group's Certified Specialty Pharmacist program.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores' charitable arm has awarded $230,000 in scholarships to pharmacy students, the organization said.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores' charitable arm has awarded $230,000 in scholarships to pharmacy students, the organization said Tuesday.

The NACDS Foundation said it gave awards ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 to pharmacy schools' scholarship funds through its Pharmacy Partners Scholarship Program. The awards will provide financial assistance to students working toward doctor of pharmacy degrees.

As the nation celebrates the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day, the National Community Pharmacists Association announced that the student team from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy won its recent student video competition on the Dispose My Meds program.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — As the nation celebrates the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day, the National Community Pharmacists Association today announced that the student team from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy won its recent student video competition on the Dispose My Meds program. The winning team will receive $250, courtesy of the Community Pharmacy Foundation, for their school’s NCPA chapter. The winning video can be viewed on NCPA’s Facebook page.

NEW YORK — The University of Utah's College of Pharmacy has opened a new research organization designed to encourage collaboration and interaction, according to published reports.

The Salt Lake City-based Deseret News reported on the opening of the L.S. Skaggs Pharmacy Institute, a 150,000-sq.-ft. facility that includes open lab space.

Smeeding is the founder of the University of Texas College of Pharmacy's Center for Pharmacoeconomic studies and has worked for a variety of companies and organizations, including the TPG National Payor Roundtable, the Jestarx Group, Digital Health Dialog and others.

CHICAGO — Chicago State University’s College of Pharmacy has announced that CVS Caremark has donated $250,000 for the development of the CVS Caremark Student Center and Technology Laboratory.

“This donation will help to improve the College’s physical space and technological resources, which greatly enhances student success within the College of Pharmacy. To say thank you is an understatement,” stated Dean Miriam Mobley Smith with the College of Pharmacy.

A smoking cessation program developed by the University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy will be deployed through Safeway pharmacies, the university announced. As part of the program, Safeway pharmacists will receive special training in counseling techniques.

It's one of the first partnerships of its kind and another example of how community pharmacy will be stepping into a more preventive healthcare role. You can expect to see more types of these smoking cessation programs along with other proactive health interventions tackling weight loss and encouraging healthier behaviors.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation announced on Monday the recipients of the annual Pharmacy Student Scholarship Awards.

The NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program identifies and recognizes the next generation of pharmacy leaders during their pursuit of academic success and educational goals. The NACDS Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $30,000 to six pharmacy students.

NEW YORK — An annual event at the Virginia state General Assembly drew several students from a local pharmacy school.

Hampton University said 24 of its students visited the General Assembly in Richmond, Va., on Jan. 30 to participate in Virginia Pharmacy Day, organized every year by the Virginia Pharmacist Association. 

The event combined a health fair — with cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure screenings — and legislative visits with state representatives to discuss pharmacy-related issues.

A pharmacy school in Idaho has achieved a 100% pass rate on a national pharmacist-licensure examination, according to published reports.

NEW YORK — A pharmacy school in Idaho has achieved a 100% pass rate on a national pharmacist-licensure examination, according to published reports.

The Idaho State Journal reported that the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy had achieved a 100% pass rate on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination, or NAPLEX, a 185-question exam that graduating pharmacy students take to test their knowledge.

The newspaper reported that the college had also achieved a 100% pass rate in 2008 and that only six of 104 pharmacy schools reported such rates in 2011.

The University of Illinois College of Pharmacy has named Kirby Lester president and CEO Garry Zage its 2012 Alumnus of the Year, the pharmacy automation manufacturer said Tuesday.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The University of Illinois College of Pharmacy has named Kirby Lester president and CEO Garry Zage its 2012 Alumnus of the Year, the pharmacy automation manufacturer said Tuesday.

Zage, who graduated from the college in 1977, purchased Kirby Lester in 2005. He has worked in pharmacy for more than 35 years and focused on pharmacy automation for more than 15 years, the company said, adding that the award recognizes graduates who are innovators, exhibit leadership and have contributed significantly to the pharmacy profession.

Healthcare company Cardinal Health is donating almost $1 million to university pharmacy programs across the country.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Healthcare company Cardinal Health is donating almost $1 million to university pharmacy programs across the country.

Cardinal, based in Dublin, Ohio, said the donations were part of the Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program, which it launched in June 2011 and which has donated more than $2.1 million to 20 universities.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has a new president-elect, the group said Thursday.

The APhA announced the election of Matthew Osterhaus, who will succeed Steven Simenson at the conclusion of the 2014 APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, Fla., on March 31, 2014. Osterhaus is the co-owner of Osterhaus Pharmacy in Maquoketa, Iowa, and an APhA trustee.
