The head of the country's largest e-prescribing network is stepping down, the company said Thursday.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The head of the country's largest e-prescribing network is stepping down, the company said Thursday.

Surescripts announced that president and CEO Harry Totonis would leave the company in March. Totonis began with the company following its 2008 merger with RxHub.

Surescripts' board of directors is retaining an executive search firm to find a successor, and a spokeswoman for the company told DSN that it was actively looking for a replacement with Totonis' help, and did not have plans to appoint an interim CEO at this time.

Following the announcement from several major chains that their respective pharmacy operations would provide 30-day prescriptions to newly-enrolled health exchange patients at no charge while they wait for their prescription cards, the National Community Pharmacists Association announced that many of its constituents have historically adopted similar patient-friendly practices.

According to reports, as many as 2.1 million Americans signed up for new insurance coverage that went into effect Jan. 1. However, even though these newly insured people had coverage, what they perhaps didn't have was the identification card to process claims, such as prescriptions, for example. But don't worry, retail pharmacy was fast to the rescue, offering those 2.1 million patients who had obtained insurance through a health exchange the benefit of the doubt and a 30-day supply of their prescriptions at no upfront cost once their coverage was verified.

Rite Aid is providing prescriptions at no upfront cost to customers who have enrolled in the health insurance marketplaces, but have not received an ID number, the retail pharmacy chain said.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is providing prescriptions at no upfront cost to customers who have enrolled in the health insurance marketplaces, but have not received an ID number, the retail pharmacy chain said.

The company said that during the month of January, it would dispense a 15- to 30-day supply of many medications to customers who bring in confirmation of their enrollment until their prescription coverage details are available. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, took full effect Wednesday.

CINCINNATI — The Kroger Co. has joined the list of retailers offering supplies of prescription drugs at no upfront cost to customers who have enrolled in the health insurance marketplaces, but have yet to receive an identification number.

The company announced Thursday that it would offer up to a 30-day supply of certain prescription drugs to customers who provide confirmation of their enrollment at one of the retailer's pharmacies.

Kinney, which operates 99 stores in central and northern New York and adjacent areas of Vermont, named Tracey Rossi as its 2013 Favorite Pharmacist of the Year, based on customer votes from all of the chain's stores.

Getting the flu shot prevented a flu-like illness for 6.6 million people last season, according to the CDC. In addition, it prevented 3.2 million medically attended illnesses and 79,000 hospitalizations. Not getting the flu shot can have adverse consequences, such as not going on that long-awaited vacation. According to a Walgreens survey, more than 11 million Americans had to change their vacation plans on account of the flu last year, most likely among families that didn't get their flu shots across the board.

Getting the flu shot works. But how much has being able to get that flu shot at the local retail pharmacy influenced the number of people getting a flu shot? More people are certainly taking advantage of the service. Walgreens recently reported that shots administered at pharmacies and clinics through November were more than 6.1 million versus nearly 4.6 million last year.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Reimbursement cuts to California's state Medicaid program are the subject of a lawsuit filed last week in San Francisco.

The Professional Pharmacy Alliance and the California Korean American Pharmacists Association filed suit against the California Department of Health Care Services in San Francisco Superior Court over an across-the-board 10% cut in 2011 to the reimbursement rates for most providers under the program, known as Medi-Cal.
