Four pharmacists from Diplomat are among the 49 across the country who have received certification from the Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board, Diplomat said Monday.

FLINT, Mich. — Four pharmacists from Diplomat are among the 49 across the country who have received certification from the Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board, Diplomat said Monday.

Diplomat said VP clinical services Gary Rice, clinical technology manager Michael Crowe, pharmacy manager Nicole Hubach and clinical manager Ryan Nolan had received the SPCB's Certified Specialty Pharmacist endorsement. The SPCB announced on Nov. 11 the first 49 pharmacists to become CSPs. The tests for the credential were administered in October.

A pharmacy school in Texas has been named CVS Caremark Partner of the Year, according to published reports.

NEW YORK — A pharmacy school in Texas has been named CVS Caremark Partner of the Year, according to published reports.

The award, which includes a $50,000 check, goes to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's School of Pharmacy, the Amarillo, Texas Globe-News reported.

The award is based on a partnership between the school and CVS that goes back more than 15 years, and the company employs more than 60 graduates from the school across Texas.

FLINT, Mich. — Cornerstone Therapeutics has added specialty pharmacy Diplomat to its limited-distribution network for a newly approved treatment for cystic fibrosis, Diplomat said Friday.

Diplomat will distribute Bethkis (tobramycin inhalation solution), which received Food and Drug Administration approval in October for treating chronic bacterial lung infections caused by P. aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis patients.

SILVER SPRING, Md. – The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals for treating thyroid cancer, the agency said Friday.

The FDA announced the approval of Nexavar (sorafenib) to treat late-stage differentiated thyroid cancer. The drug was already approved for kidney and liver cancers. The drug works by limiting cancer cell growth and replication by inhibiting proteins within the cells.

PRINCETON, N.J. — Sandoz has launched an authorized generic version of a topical drug for treating actinic keratosis, the company said.

Sandoz, the generics arm of Swiss drug maker Novartis, announced the launch of authorized generic diclofenac gel in the 3% strength. The drug is a version of PharmaDerm's Solaraze.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has launched its generic version of a drug for patients with cystic fibrosis, the Israeli drug maker said Thursday.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has launched its generic version of a drug for patients with cystic fibrosis, the Israeli drug maker said Thursday.

Teva announced the launch of tobramycin inhalation solution, a generic version of Novartis' drug Tobi. The Food and Drug Administration approved Teva's product last month. The drug is used to treat CF in patients whose lungs contain bacteria called Pseudomonas aeroginosa.

Tobi had sales of about $350 million during the 12-month period that ended in June, according to IMS Health.

NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration has declined to approve an experimental drug for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder developed by Forest Labs and Gedeon Richter, a Hungarian drug company, the two said Thursday.

The companies said the FDA issued a complete-response letter for cariprazine. The agency issues a complete-response letter when it has finished reviewing an application but issues remain that preclude final approval. In the letter, the FDA acknowledged the drug's efficacy, but wanted more clinical trial data.

BURLINGTON, Mass. — While drug companies are developing treatments for a wide variety of diseases, the greatest amount of mid- to late-stage research and development activity is in cancer treatments, according to a new report.

According to healthcare market research company Decision Resources, among the top 25 drug companies, oncology is the focus for 30% of phase-2 drugs and 22% of phase-3 drugs. Other areas seeing strong activity include drugs for obesity, diabetes, infections and central nervous system disorders.

Teva has introduced a generic version of a drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the company said Thursday.

NORTH WALES, Pa. – Teva has introduced a generic version of a drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the company said Thursday.

The drug maker announced the launch of dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride extended-release capsules, a generic version of Novartis' Focalin XR.

Focalin XR has annual sales of about $202 million, according to IMS Health.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas attended the grand opening of a new pharmacy hub that will serve post-acute patients in and around the state.

AlixaRx announced Wednesday the opening of the 11,400-sq. ft. Lenexa, Kan., hub, for which the company invested $1.4 million in new equipment and training and hired 42 employees. The hub will provide pharmacy services to nursing facilities in Kansas and neighboring states.

FLINT, Mich. — Diplomat senior director of education and quality Jennifer Hagerman has been named as president-elect of the Michigan Pharmacists Association for 2014, the specialty pharmacy company said Wednesday.

Diplomat said members of the MPA had voted in Hagerman, who directs Diplomat's training arm, Diplomat University, as well as overseeing the company's quality assurance program and directing its Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Program.

Drug maker Perrigo has filed with the Food and Drug Administration for approval of a generic topical ointment for treating acne in adolescents and adults, the company said Wednesday.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Drug maker Perrigo has filed with the Food and Drug Administration for approval of a generic topical ointment for treating acne in adolescents and adults, the company said Wednesday.

Perrigo said it filed for approval of clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide gel in the 1.2%/2.5% strengths. The drug is used to treat acne in patients 12 years and older.

GURGAON, India — Ranbaxy Labs is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its operations in Ukraine, the Indian generic drug maker said Wednesday.

The drug maker established a base in the eastern European country in 1993 and has since become the largest drug company in the market, whose value is estimated at $3.7 billion, according to the company. Ranbaxy's products in Ukraine include branded and generic drugs.

Unilife Corp. has entered a deal with Hikma to launch 20 generic injectable drugs using Unilife's pre-filled syringe technology, the two companies said Wednesday.

YORK, Pa. — Unilife Corp. has entered a deal with Hikma to launch 20 generic injectable drugs using Unilife's pre-filled syringe technology, the two companies said Wednesday.

Under the 15-year agreement, Unilife will supply Hikma with its platform, including the Unifill syringe and the Unifill Nexus. Hikma has selected an initial list of 20 generic injectable products that it will include in the deal.

Under the deal, Hikma will pay Unilife $40 million, including $5 million upfront, $15 million in 2014 and $20 million in 2015.
