What's more, Congress should adopt alternative cost-saving strategies, including utilizing local pharmacists. That was a key message in an op-ed co-authored by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the National Community Pharmacists Association and published June 13 in The Hill's Congress Blog.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has begun shipping a generic drug for allergies, partnering company Perrigo said Wednesday.

Triamcinolone acetonide nasal spray is a generic version of Sanofi’s Nasacort AQ and is used to treat nasal symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergies in patients ages 6 years and older. The Food and Drug Administration approved the generic version of the drug in 2009. The generic was made by Barr Labs, which Teva acquired a few years ago.

INDIANAPOLIS — A new oral medication for Type 2 diabetes made by Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim has become available in pharmacies, the companies said Wednesday.

Lilly and BI announced the availability of Tradjenta (linagliptin) in chain and independent pharmacies around the country.

Urinozinc prostate formula now is available at all corporate-owned GNC Live Well stores and at select GNC franchise stores, the company said. Product ingredients for Urinozinc include saw palmetto extract, pumpkin seed, zinc, pygeum africanum, lycopene, magnesium, selenium, folic acid and vitamins B6, B12 and E.

Urinozinc currently is available for purchase at such retail locations as Bi-Lo, Duane Reade, H-E-B, Publix, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Walmart.

Watson Pharmaceuticals has filed a regulatory approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for a generic drug for eye disease, the company said Tuesday.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Watson Pharmaceuticals has filed a regulatory approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for a generic drug for eye disease, the company said Tuesday.

Watson is seeking approval for olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution in the 0.2% strength. The drug, used to treat itching in the eye resulting from allergic conjunctivitis, is a generic version of Alcon’s Pataday.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Bayer on Tuesday introduced its new Bayer Advanced Aspirin, billed as relieving pain “twice as fast” as the previous Extra Strength Bayer Aspirin.

Using a patent-pending Pro-Release technology, the particles in the new formulation are one-tenth the size of Extra Strength Bayer Aspirin and dissolve six times faster.

New findings released Tuesday as part of the Trojan U.S. Sex Census revealed the average adult has sex 120 times a year (2.3 times per week), with more people in the Northeast reporting having sex more than any other U.S. region, averaging 130 times per year (2.5 times per week).

The Food and Drug Administration has approved two cough-cold medications made by Cypress Pharmaceutical, the company said Monday.

MADISON, Miss. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved two cough-cold medications made by Cypress Pharmaceutical, the company said Monday.

Cypress announced the approval of Zutripro (hydrocodone bitartrate, chlorpheniramine maleate and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) and Rezira (hydrocodone bitartrate and pseudoephedrine). Both drugs are oral solutions and, because they contain the opioid hydrocodone, are classified as schedule III controlled substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Cypress subsidiary Hawthorn Pharmaceuticals will market the drugs.

NEW YORK — A new survey indicated that almost 70% of men have an easier time taking care of their cars than their own health.

The survey of 501 men ages 45 to 65 years, which was commissioned by the Men’s Health Network and drug maker Abbott, also found that more than 40% would be more likely to address car issues than health issues, while 28% don’t visit the doctor regularly, and 56% said they were more worried about their spouse’s health than their own.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved changes to the labels of several drugs made by Merck, the agency said Friday.

Merck’s Label Standardization Project includes the revision of 34 container labels for 16 drugs, all orally administered pills. These include the cardiovascular drugs Cozaar (losartan) and Hyzaar (losartan and hydrochlorothiazide), the diabetes drugs Januvia (sitagliptin) and Janumet (sitagliptin and metformin), the allergy and asthma drug Singulair (montelukast), the HIV drug Isentress (raltegravir) and others.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — Merck will collaborate with a Korean manufacturer to develop a biosimilar version of a drug used for autoimmune diseases.

Merck, which operates outside the United States and Canada as MSD to avoid confusion with Germany-based Merck KGaA, announced Monday a collaboration with Seoul, South Korea-based Hanwha Chemical to develop and commercialize HD203, a biosimilar version of Enbrel (etanercept), made by Amgen and Pfizer. The drug is used to treat such disorders as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

WASHINGTON — More than 200 drugs are under development in the United States for treating skin diseases, according to the country’s largest pharmaceutical industry trade group.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said Monday that the country’s drug makers were developing 263 medicines for skin diseases that affect more than one-third of the U.S population. A study by the Lewin Group found that the annual total cost of skin diseases was $39.3 billion in 2005.
