HYDERABAD, India — Generic drug maker Dr. Reddy’s Labs has launched its version of a popular antibiotic.

The company said its levofloxacin tablets in the 250-mg, 500-mg and 750-mg strengths have entered the market, following the Food and Drug Administration's approval of Dr. Reddy's abbreviated new drug application. Dr. Reddy's levofloxacin tablets in the 250-mg and 500-mg strengths are available in 50-count bottles, while the 750-mg strength bottle is available in 30-count bottles.

CHADDS FORD, Pa. — Endo Pharmaceuticals has acquired a provider of devices and therapies for male and female pelvic health.

Endo said its acquisition of American Medical Systems has boosted the drug maker's devices and services business segment, and the combination of AMS with Endo's existing platform will provide additional cost-effective solutions across the entire urology spectrum.

The company announced its definitive agreement to acquire AMS in a cash transaction valued for approximately $2.9 billion.

HAYWARD, Calif. — Impax Labs has expanded its senior management team with two appointments.

The generic drug maker said that Mark Fitch has joined the company as SVP operations, while Jeff Nornhold will become SVP quality affairs. Fitch, who joins Impax from Nycomed US, brings more than 35 years of pharmaceutical experience to his role. Nornhold, who most recently served as VP quality operations at drug maker Watson, is a 20-year pharmaceutical industry veteran.

Both Fitch and Nornhold will report to Impax president and CEO Larry Hsu.

The company said that Mark Emmert and Barry Schochet will serve as independent directors. Emmert serves as president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, while Schochet serves as president and CEO of BPS Health Ventures, a healthcare consulting and investment firm.

Pfizer and Acura Pharmaceuticals said that their drug Oxecta (oxycodone HCl, USP tablets) is the first tamper-resistant medication designed to deter abuse and misuse with Aversion technology, which is being licensed by Pfizer from Acura.

ProStrakan has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market an ointment designed to treat moderate to severe pain associated with chronic anal fissures.

GALASHIELS, Scotland, and BEDMINSTER, N.J. — ProStrakan has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market an ointment designed to treat moderate to severe pain associated with chronic anal fissures.

The drug maker, which is a subsidiary of Kyowa Hakko Kirin, said that it received regulatory approval for Rectiv (nitroglycerin) ointment 0.4%. Rectiv currently is the only FDA-approved prescription product for patients with this condition. ProStrakan expects Rectiv to be available in the United States in first quarter 2012.

The New York Times reported that FICO developed the FICO Medication Adherence Score, designed to predict when patients might not use their medications properly or take their doses. Payers will use the scores, based on such data as homeownership and employment, to determine which patients should receive various reminders to take their drugs.

PITTSBURGH — General Nutrition Centers announced that its president and chief merchandising officer has resigned.

Beth Kaplan, who served in the role for 3.5 years, is leaving the company to pursue personal interests. As a member of the senior management team, Kaplan helped the company prepare for its recent initial public offering.

The role of president will be reassumed by GNC CEO Joe Fortunato.

The warnings represent the most significant changes to cigarette labels in more than 25 years and will affect everything from packaging to advertisements. The warnings are required to be placed on all cigarette packs, cartons and ads no later than September 2012.

Regeneron said Friday that the FDA’s Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee unanimously recommended approval of Eylea (aflibercept) ophthalmic solution for the treatment of a form of age-related macular degeneration, also known as wet AMD. The disease causes abnormal growth of new blood vessels in the eye.
