Amid debt ceiling talks, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores has sent a letter to President Barack Obama and to the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate leadership outlining key areas to help ensure continued patient access to pharmacy services through such federally funded programs as Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE, the association announced on Wednesday.

As of last count, RediClinic had 854 "likes." Physicals at RediClinic are usually priced at $59.

The 20,000-sq.-ft. space is adjacent to its Earth City, Mo., location, and the company said it would ensure adequate space to cater to its current and future pharmaceutical, biotech and device business partners.

Taking drugs for treating HIV might reduce the risk of infection among heterosexual couples, according to two new studies conducted in Africa.

NEW YORK — Taking drugs for treating HIV might reduce the risk of infection among heterosexual couples, according to two new studies conducted in Africa.

One study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and conducted among 4,758 couples in Kenya and Uganda, found that when taken daily, Gilead’s Viread (tenofovir) reduced the rates of infection by at least 62% compared with placebo. Truvada (tenofovir and emtricitabine), another drug made by Gilead, reduced infection risk by 73%.

FLINT, Mich. — The country’s largest privately owned specialty pharmacy provider recently got a visit from the U.S. secretary of labor.

Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy announced last week that labor secretary Hilda Solis toured the company’s new headquarters at a former General Motors building in Flint, Mich.

“This is testimony of what people can do when they pull together,” Solis said, referring to Diplomat’s use of the building. “Flint, Mich., is on the map again.”

SHIRLEY, N.Y. — American Regent has launched a generic drug for relieving pressure inside the eye, the company said.

American Regent announced the availability of latanoprost ophthalmic solution in the 0.005% strength.

The drug is a generic version of Pfizer’s Xalatan and is used to treat such conditions as glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk will work with advocacy group Children with Diabetes to distribute materials to children newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, the two said Thursday.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk will work with advocacy group Children with Diabetes to distribute materials to children newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, the two said Thursday.

The approximately 7,000 kits, designed to help them learn to live with the condition, include a booklet, savings offers and patient-support videos, and were created based on feedback from CWD members with Type 1 diabetes. Patients can order the kits through their doctors.

The rate of obesity among adults has increased across 16 states, with no states seeing a drop, according to a new report released by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

WASHINGTON — The rate of obesity among adults has increased across 16 states, with no states seeing a drop, according to a new report released by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The report also found that 12 states now have obesity rates above 30%, versus four years ago when just one state had a 30% obesity rate, TFAH and RWJF said.

Consequently, Walgreens quickly has become the chain drug store retailer with the largest following on Foursquare, while developing a growing presence on other social communities, including Twitter and YouTube.

Watson said it submitted its application for lisdexamfetamine dimesylate capsules, a generic version of Shire’s Vyvanse.

HYDERABAD, India — Dr. Reddy’s Labs has launched a generic drug for treating high blood pressure, the company said Thursday.

Dr. Reddy’s announced the launch of amlodipine besylate and benazepril hydrochloride capsules in the 5-mg/40-mg and 10-mg/40-mg strengths.

The drug is a generic version of Novartis’ Lotrel, which had sales of $290 million during the 12-month period ended in March, according to IMS Health.

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. — Generic drug maker Hi-Tech Pharmacal reported its fourth-quarter net sales increased 45% to $57.2 million from the year-ago period.

Net income for Hi-Tech totaled $12.7 million, or 98 cents per diluted share, compared with $6.5 million, or 50 cents per diluted share in fourth quarter 2010.
