The FDA announced the approval of Anoro Ellipta (umeclidinium; vilanterol inhalation powder) as a once-per-day maintenance treatment for airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, a term that encompasses chronic bronchitis and emphysema; smoking is the leading cause of COPD in the United States.

BALTIMORE — Lupin has launched a generic drug for treating HIV, following its victory in a patent-infringement suit in federal court, the Indian drug maker said Wednesday.

Lupin's U.S. subsidiary launched its generic version of ViiV Healthcare's Trizivir (abacavir sulfate; lamivudine; zidovudine) tablets in the 300-mg/150-mg/300-mg strength. The launch follows a ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware that the drug did not infringe on Viiv's patent.

EMD Serono, the name the Merck KGaA uses in the United States to avoid confusion with U.S.-based Merck & Co., and the National MS Society said the money will help encourage early-stage drug discovery for the autoimmune disease.

MALVERN, Pa. – Endo Health Solutions will acquire the maker of a patch used to treat migraines that received Food and Drug Administration approval at the beginning of this year.

Endo said Monday that it would buy NuPathe for $105 million. In January, the FDA approved NuPathe's patch, Zecuity, a disposable, single-use, battery-powered transdermal patch that delivers the drug sumatriptan, the most widely prescribed migraine medication.

According to published reports, Express Scripts may be looking to start a "price war" among the makers of the latest generation of drugs for hepatitis C — which promise much shorter treatment times than standard therapies, but also cost significantly more — in an effort to bring down prices.

The stakes are certainly high. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 3.2 million people in the United States chronically infected with hepatitis C and hence at risk for liver cancer, and the CDC recommends that anyone born between 1945 and 1965 get tested for the virus.
