From 2012 to 2017, global spending on medicines will increase from $205 billion to $235 billion, according to IMS Health. By 2017, 36% of the spend will be on generics, a number that is 9% more than the percentage in 2013.

As a result of the patent cliff, generic drug manufacturers have thrived while branded pharmaceutical manufacturers have suffered. Branded pharmaceutical manufacturers are expected to suffer even more in the coming years, as many more important patents will lose exclusivity.
A recent paper from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services delves into these issues and more.

Also elected were Kenneth Frazier, chairman, president and CEO of Merck, as chairman-elect of the PhRMA board of directors, and George Scangos, CEO of Biogen Idec, as board treasurer.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich got his first look on Tuesday at what’s being called a next-generation pharmaceutical distribution center — under construction in central Ohio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. John Kasich got his first look on Tuesday at what’s being called a next-generation pharmaceutical distribution center — under construction in central Ohio.

AmerisourceBergen’s new national distribution center will process approximately 96 million units of medication daily. The facility is expected to employ 100 associates when it opens in the fall of 2014. The company already employs nearly 500 people in the Columbus area.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced that it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its generic form of Lovaza (omega-3-acid ethyl esters capsules, USP) in the United States.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced that it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its generic form of Lovaza (omega-3-acid ethyl esters capsules, USP) in the United States.

Lovaza is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerdide levels in adult patients, according to the FDA. Teva believes it is the first to file and plans to begin shipping immediately.

Lovaza capsules, marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, had annual sales of $1.1 billion in the United States as of December 2013, according to IMS data.

The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. Subject to customary closing conditions, the transaction currently is expected to be completed in the third calendar-quarter of 2014.

Greenstone announced the introduction of Piroxicam capsules to its generic pharmaceutical product line. The drug is offered in dosage strengths of 10 mg and 20 mg, and is the generic equivalent to Feldene.

PEAPACK, N.J. — Greenstone announced the introduction of Piroxicam capsules to its generic pharmaceutical product line. The drug is offered in dosage strengths of 10 mg and 20 mg, and is the generic equivalent to Feldene.

Piroxicam is intended for the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This new, authorized generic adds to Greenstone’s growing line of products, and is backed by the distribution and customer service support of Pfizer Inc., the company said.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced that it received approval for generic Evista (raloxifene) tablets, 60-mg, in the United States.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries on Tuesday announced that it received approval for generic Evista (raloxifene) tablets, 60-mg, in the United States. The company was the first to file, which means the product is eligible for 180 days of marketing exclusivity. Teva will begin shipping the drug within the next 30 days.

Evista 60-mg tablets, marketed by Eli Lilly and Co., had annual sales in the United States of approximately $824 million as of December 2013, according to IMS data. The drug is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
