NEW YORK — A drug made by Pfizer for treating pain disorders doesn't affect men's reproductive functions, according to a new post-approval clinical study.

The drug maker announced Monday the results of study A0081104 of Lyrica (pregabalin), which compared the drug with placebo in healthy males to assess its effects on sperm production. The phase-4 study was required by the Food and Drug Administration.

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — Israeli drug maker Taro Pharmaceutical Industries has rejected India-based Sun Pharmaceutical Industries' takeover bid, Taro said Thursday.

Taro said its board of directors unanimously voted to reject a $24.50-per-share offer Sun made on Oct. 18, 2011. Taro began listing its shares on the New York Stock Exchange in March.

Sun has sought to buy Taro since 2007.

HYDERABAD, India — Dr. Reddy's Labs has launched a generic version of a popular cholesterol drug.

The company announced Wednesday the launch of atorvastatin calcium tablets in the 10-mg, 20-mg, 40-mg and 80-mg strengths.

The drug is a generic version of Pfizer's Lipitor, which had sales of slightly more than $8 billion during the 12-month period ended in March, according to IMS Health.

NORTH WALES, Pa. — Teva Pharmaceuticals has introduced a generic drug for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the company said.

Teva announced the launch of methylphenidate hydrochloride extended-release capsules in the 20-mg, 30-mg and 40-mg strength. The drug, a generic version of Novartis' Ritalin, is available in 100-pill bottles.

The deal, worth $14.25 per share, would give GSK full ownership of the lupus drug Benlysta (belimumab), as well as albiglutide, an experimental drug for diabetes, and darapladib, an experimental heart disease drug.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic contraceptive made by Watson Pharmaceuticals, the drug maker said Friday.

Watson announced the approval of Next Choice One Dose (levonorgestrel) tablets in the 1.5-mg strength. The drug is an emergency contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy following unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.

The drug is a generic version of Teva Women's Health's Plan B One-Step, which had sales of about $88 million during the 12-month period ended in March, according to IMS Health.

NEW YORK — Bristol-Myers Squibb is acquiring Amylin Pharmaceuticals, the drug maker said Friday.

Bristol announced that it would acquire Amylin for $5.3 billion, or $31 per share. The total value of the acquisition is about $7 billion, including $1.7 billion in Amylin's contractual payment and debt obligations.

WAYNE, N.J., and SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Food and Drug Administration has granted priority review for an investigational cancer treatment created by Bayer and Onyx Pharmaceuticals.

The companies said Bayer's new drug application for oral multikinase inhibitor regorafenib initially was filed in April for the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, whose disease has progressed after approved standard therapies. The FDA grants priority review to medicines that provide a treatment where little or no adequate therapy exists.

PITTSBURGH — A federal court has ruled against Mylan in a case filed by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries over a drug to treat multiple sclerosis.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled Monday that Mylan's proposed generic version of the drug Copaxone (glatiramer acetate) infringed Teva's patents.

Mylan responded that it was "disappointed" by the decision and would appeal once it had the opportunity to review it in full.

The appeals court affirmed a U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware's decision — made March 31 — that asserted that patents related to Allergan's Sanctura XR (trospium chloride extended-release capsules) are invalid. Watson's ANDA for a generic version of Sanctura XR is pending with the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Reddy's Labs and Merck KGaA subsidiary Merck Serono announced a partnership to develop biosimilar cancer treatments, most of them monoclonal antibodies, for global markets. Based in Darmstadt, Germany, Merck KGaA operates in the United States under the name EMD to distinguish itself from U.S. drug maker Merck.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Drug maker Takeda Pharmaceutical has finished its purchase of URL Pharma, the companies said Monday.

Japan-based Takeda announced in April that it would buy URL for $800 million. The acquisition, through local subsidiary Takeda Pharmaceuticals USA, gives Takeda control of the gout drug Colcrys (colchicine). URL will report to Takeda Pharmaceuticals USA president Douglas Cole, and the acquisition is expected to boost 2012 sales by $550 million, Takeda said.

Actavis, which recently agreed to an acquisition by Watson Pharmaceuticals, announced the launch of nifedipine extended-release tablets in the 90-mg strength, a generic version of Bayer's Adalat CC.

Various versions of the drug had sales of about $23 million in 2011, according to IMS Health.

The drug maker announced the appointment of former Teva Pharmaceutical Industries president and CEO Israel Makov as chairman. Makov, who began working for Teva in 1995, and led it as president and CEO from 2002 to 2007, is widely credited with that company becoming the world's largest generic drug maker and one of the world's largest drug makers overall.
