Stern was credited with building the Keystone Organization into a leading health and beauty sales agency, which merged into Crossmark in 2000. Stern retired two years after the Keystone/Crossmark merger but came out of retirement to serve as an honorary chairman for the Greenwood Group in 2004.

Frederik Meijer, the founder of the supercenter retail chain of the same name, died Nov. 25. He was 91.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Frederik Meijer, the founder of the supercenter retail chain of the same name, died Nov. 25. He was 91.

A Michigan native, Meijer first entered the grocery business as a bagger in his father's store. By 1962, Meijer opened its first “Thrifty Acres” supercenter in Grand Rapids, a food and general merchandise store that touted one-stop shopping for customers. The chain now operates 197 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. The company also celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2009.

WARWICK, R.I. — Kenneth O’Leary, president and founder of Cara Inc., passed away Oct. 12 at home after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A 50-year industry veteran, O'Leary, 83, started his career as a detail rep for Schieffelin & Co. in New York. He also spent time with Schering (White Labs), Miles (Dome Labs), CR Bard (Davol) and in 1983 founded Cara Inc.

Brown comes to Emerson from Bayer HealthCare where he held a variety of roles in sales and category management for Bayer’s over-the-counter businesses working with the Walmart account. His primary responsibility was working as category captain to Walmart on the cough, cold and allergy category. Brown utilized his knowledge of the cough, cold and allergy category in working with Bayer internal brand teams to develop and launch new items, as well as setting brand strategies.

CINCINNATI — Kroger on Tuesday promoted Donna Giordano to the role of president of the Ralphs division.

Giordano, 57, has been president of the company's Quality Food Centers division, based in Seattle, since 2002. She succeeds Mike Donnelly, who was recently promoted to SVP merchandising for Kroger.

ENCINO, Calif. — Larry King is taking on a new role for television viewers who are used to seeing him behind the hosting desk at CNN, as he will serve as the spokesman for BreathGemz, a breath freshener product.

King and his wife, Shawn, will star in a widespread media campaign to nationally launch the product, a minted coated capsule that is ingested by swallowing.

BreathGemz comes to the market from Anthony and Lauren Raissen's Gemz Brands USA. The husband and wife team have successfully launched many national brands.

The former head of a now defunct pharmacy chain has died, according to published reports.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The former head of a now defunct pharmacy chain has died, according to published reports.

Rick Keltsch, who led the Keltsch Bros. pharmacy chain as the company's president and CEO until its merger with Scott's Food & Pharmacy — a regional chain that was a subsidiary of Supervalu before being acquired by Kroger in April 2007 — died unexpectedly on Wednesday. He was 64 years old.

Keltsch is survived by his wife Jennie, children and grandchildren.

Retired Leiner Health SVP marketing Bob LaFerriere, 62, passed Feb. 4 from multiple myeloma, according to reports.

TRABUCO CANYON, Calif. — Retired Leiner Health SVP marketing Bob LaFerriere, 62, passed Feb. 4 from multiple myeloma, according to reports.

LaFerriere was a 40-year drug industry veteran who started at Thrifty Drug and Discount Stores scooping ice cream. In 1992, LaFerrierre left Thrifty as SVP purchasing to become president and CEO at Slim Fast Foods. He later joined Leiner Health as SVP marketing and retired in 2008.

LaFerriere is survived by his wife, Jill, and his sons, Chad and Matt.

ROGERS, Ark. Former Walmart executive Jack Shewmaker passed away Wednesday evening. He was 72.

 

Shewmaker began his career at Walmart in 1970 and rose steadily through the ranks of the company, serving in numerous capacities, including district manager; VP security (now known as loss prevention); VP store operations; EVP store operations, personnel and merchandise; CFO; and president and COO. Shewmaker retired from the company in1988, but continued as a member of Walmart’s board of directors.
