CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Biotech company Genzyme is selling its diagnostics business to Sekisui Chemical for $265 million, Genzyme said Thursday.

 

Under the deal, Sekisui will purchase the diagnostics business’ assets, including product lines and technologies, and offer employment to its 575 employees while maintaining operations in all of its current locations.

In addition, MinuteClinic president and CVS Caremark SVP and associate chief medical officer Andrew Sussman presented MinuteClinic's approach to care at a World Economic Forum satellite session attended by healthcare experts, regulatory representatives, researchers and other innovators in Montreux, Switzerland, this week.

Mintel found nearly half (47%) of consumers surveyed said that instant redemption opportunities motivated them to use a particular loyalty program more than others. Such incentives as cash-back opportunities would be a deciding factor, 36% of respondents said.

BASEL, Switerland — Swiss drug maker Novartis will focus on innovation as part of a program for long-term growth, the company said Wednesday.

Novartis touted its research and development pipeline of 142 drugs in clinical trials, 35% of which are in phase 3 or undergoing regulatory review, as well as a plan to submit 30 more drugs for regulatory review by the end of 2012. The company also plans to continue investing in vaccine development.

WASHINGTON The head of an organization that accredits pharmacy technicians will serve as president of an international credentialing organization next year.

 

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board announced Thursday that executive director and CEO Melissa Murer Corrigan would serve as the 2011 president of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and be installed at the ICE Annual Education Conference in Atlanta, which also took place Thursday. ICE provides educational, networking and advocacy resources for credentialing organizations.

SAN FRANCISCO The city government of San Francisco hopes to expand a life-science research center in one of the city’s neighborhoods, according to published reports.

 

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday that mayor Gavin Newsom wanted to expand the life-science and biotech hub in the Mission Bay neighborhood to Pier 70 and the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, which lie to the south.

David Boehnen, who as EVP was responsible for legal, business development, real estate and store development, as well as government affairs, will leave his post at the retailer but will serve as a senior counselor for Supervalu president and CEO Craig Herkert for one year.

The change is effective Dec. 15.

ROGERS, Ark. Former Walmart executive Jack Shewmaker passed away Wednesday evening. He was 72.

 

Shewmaker began his career at Walmart in 1970 and rose steadily through the ranks of the company, serving in numerous capacities, including district manager; VP security (now known as loss prevention); VP store operations; EVP store operations, personnel and merchandise; CFO; and president and COO. Shewmaker retired from the company in1988, but continued as a member of Walmart’s board of directors.

NEW YORK — Soft housing prices drove down the Deloitte consumer spending index for the month of October, Deloitte said Wednesday.

The index, which is comprised of four components — tax burden, initial unemployment claims, real wages and real home prices — fell to 4.63%, from an upwardly revised gain of 4.84% a month ago.

But Deloitte said that the drop is no reason to give up hope on the holiday season.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. Dollar Tree on Wednesday announced that it has completed its purchase of the assets of 86 Dollar Giant stores for approximately $52 million in cash, plus the assumption of certain liabilities.

 

This marks Dollar Tree's first expansion of retail operations outside of the United States.

The company was motivated to do the promotion as its customers in the military and foreign service have said it is difficult to find essential products when they are far away from home.

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — The European Commission has approved the sale of Sara Lee's global body care and European detergent businesses to Unilever, provided that Unilever divest the Sanex brand of bath and body products in the European market after it acquires the business from Sara Lee.

The global body care and European detergent businesses encompass such brands as Sanex, Radox and Duschdas. The transaction was originally announced in September.
