A pharmacy professor and compounding pharmacy owner are candidates for president-elect of the American Pharmacists Association for 2015-2016, the group said.

WASHINGTON — A pharmacy professor and compounding pharmacy owner are candidates for president-elect of the American Pharmacists Association for 2015-2016, the group said.

The APhA said the candidates for the position are Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy professor and community pharmacy residency program director Jean-Venable Goode and Newport Beach, Calif.-based Westcliff Compounding Pharmacy owner Michael Pavlovich. Members will have the opportunity to meet the candidates at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, Fla., in March.

Family Dollar reported sales of $2.5 billion in first quarter 2014, a 3.2% increase over the same period last year, the dollar store chain said.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar reported sales of $2.5 billion in first quarter 2014, a 3.2% increase over the same period last year, the dollar store chain said Thursday.

For the 13-week quarter that ended Nov. 30, the chain said sales were strongest in refrigerated and frozen food, health aids and tobacco. Same-store sales during the quarter decreased by 2.8% due to fewer customer transactions and a slight decrease in average customer transaction value.

The head of the country's largest e-prescribing network is stepping down, the company said Thursday.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The head of the country's largest e-prescribing network is stepping down, the company said Thursday.

Surescripts announced that president and CEO Harry Totonis would leave the company in March. Totonis began with the company following its 2008 merger with RxHub.

Surescripts' board of directors is retaining an executive search firm to find a successor, and a spokeswoman for the company told DSN that it was actively looking for a replacement with Totonis' help, and did not have plans to appoint an interim CEO at this time.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has appointed Erez Vigodman as president and CEO, the Israeli drug maker said Thursday.

Vigodman will replace acting president and CEO Eyal Desheh, who will return to his previous position as group EVP and CFO. Desheh took the interim position after the departure of former president and CEO Jeremy Levin in October 2013.

NEW YORK — A New York-based distribution, merchandising and analytics firm has hired a former executive from Rite Aid and Duane Reade.

L&R Distributors announced Wednesday the hiring of Mike Cirilli as VP category management and procurement. L&R distributes more than 30,000 general merchandise, health, beauty and cosmetics products, pointing more than 12,000 points of distribution across the supermarket, drug, independent and mass-merchandise channels.

NEW YORK — The semi-retired CEO of Costco Wholesale has been named as the recipient of the top award from the National Retail Federation at the trade group's upcoming trade show this month, the NRF said Wednesday.

Jim Sinegal, who stepped down as president CEO of the Issaquah, Wash.-based club retailer in 2012, after 29 years, but still plays an active role in the company and is a member of its board of directors, is scheduled to accept the NRF's Gold Medal Award for 2014 at Retail's BIG Show, which takes place from Jan. 12-15 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York.

PITTSBURGH — Generic drug maker Mylan has hired a former Pfizer executive to its executive leadership team.

The company announced Wednesday the appointment of Adele Gulf as EVP global collaboration and strategic operations. Before working for Mylan, Gulfo served as regional president of Latin America for Pfizer's Emerging Markets Business Unit, overseeing more than 4,000 employees in 23 countries and achieving more than $3 billion in sales in Latin America in 2012.

A professor at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy has been named the first Rite Aid professor in community pharmacy, the school said.

ATHENS, Ga. — A professor at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy has been named the first Rite Aid professor in community pharmacy, the school said.

Beth Phillips, who took the new role on Dec. 1, joined the college's faculty in 2007, and the school said the professorship, its newest, includes a $250,000 endowment for salary support, research and teaching assistance and traveling expenses. Of the school's other endowed professorships, one also is sponsored by Kroger.

In his Krebs on Security blog, Brian Krebs identified a Ukrainian man as someone allegedly selling the credit and debit card data, though there was no evidence that the man was behind the theft itself.

MINNEAPOLIS — The chief executive of Target is reaching out to consumers in the wake of the widespread hacking of credit and debit card data at Target stores that the company confirmed last week.

In a statement on the mass-merchandise retailer's website, president, chairman and CEO Gregg Steinhafel sought to ameliorate customers' worries about the possibility that their cards were compromised. He emphasized that the issue had been "identified and eliminated," while the retailer extended a 10% discount to customers who shopped at its stores on Saturday and Sunday.

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — A Barre, Vt., pharmacist has been named Kinney Drugs' top pharmacist, the regional chain announced Monday.

Kinney, which operates 99 stores in central and northern New York and adjacent areas of Vermont, named Tracey Rossi as its 2013 Favorite Pharmacist of the Year, based on customer votes from all of the chain's stores.

Alvarez is co-chairman of the international law firm Greenburg Traurig, which he joined in 1973. Before his appointment as chairman, he served as executive chairman for more than three years and as its CEO for 13 years, starting in 1997.

LAKELAND, Fla. — After more than 46 years of service, Publix Super Markets Miami division VP Bill Fauerbach has announced his decision to retire at the end of March 2014.

“Bill helped grow our culture and build a solid foundation on which the Miami division will continue to grow. We thank him for his many contributions, and he will be missed by us all,” said Publix CEO Ed Crenshaw.

With this retirement, Publix announced the promotion of Kevin Murphy to Miami division VP, effective April 1.

The APhA Foundation announced in September the official installment of Stuart Haines, professor of and vice chairman for clinical services in the Unviersity of Maryland School of Pharmacy's Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science in Baltimore, as well as a clinical pharmacy specialist in primary care at the West Palm Beach, Fla., VA Medical Center.
