Rite Aid posted a 0.4% increase in same-store sales for the month of August, the retail pharmacy operator said Wednesday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid posted a 0.4% increase in same-store sales for the month of August, the retail pharmacy operator said Wednesday.

The increase included a 2.4% increase in front-end comps and a 0.6% decrease in pharmacy comps. Total store sales for the five-week period that ended Saturday were roughly $2.41 billion, a 0.4% decrease from last year's $2.414 billion. Same-store prescription count increased by 4.5%.

Giant-Landover has appointed Gayle Shields as its director of pharmacy operations, the Ahold USA-owned supermarket chain said Friday.

LANDOVER, Md. — Giant-Landover has appointed Gayle Shields as its director of pharmacy operations, the Ahold USA-owned supermarket chain said Friday.

Shields brings nearly 25 years of pharmacy operations experience to the chain, officially known as Giant Food of Landover, Md., and a separate banner from Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant Food Stores, also owned by Ahold. Shields previously worked as director of pharmacy operations for Albertson's and Save Mart, and attended college and graduate school in South Africa.

Online giant Amazon.com will begin collecting a 6% state sales tax on purchases being shipped to Pennsylvania beginning Sept. 1, according to published reports.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Online giant Amazon.com will begin collecting a 6% state sales tax on purchases being shipped to Pennsylvania beginning Sept. 1, according to published reports.

The move is being made so that the online retailer will be in compliance with a new Pennsylvania state law going into effect that requires online retailers to collect state taxes if that retailer has a physical presence in the state.

SWIFTWATER, Pa. — Sanofi's vaccine's division has launched a new treatment for head lice, the company said Monday.

Sanofi Pasteur announced the availability of Sklice (ivermectin) lotion in the 0.5% strength. The drug is approved for patients ages 6 months and older.

The company said head lice cases have increased rapidly in the United States, affecting between 6 million and 12 million children ages 3 to 11 years each year.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Members of Rite Aid's loyalty card program will have special reward points added to their cards automatically starting next month, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

Beginning Sept. 2, Wellness+ members will have +UPs loaded to their cards automatically. +UPs are special rewards earned when certain items or groups of items are purchased and can be used like cash toward future purchases. Rite Aid COO Ken Martindale said the national rollout of the Load2Card feature for +UPs would follow a seven-month pilot in four cities.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — A delivery truck driver for Rite Aid has won the retail pharmacy chain's annual driving competition, the company said.

Rite Aid announced Monday that Paul Matyseck of Lancaster, Calif., a Rite Aid driver for nine years, won the Rite Aid Driver Skills Challenge in Perryman, Md. Matyseck competed against 11 other Rite Aid drivers in the competition, which began in 2004.

Teva Women's Health, part of Israeli drug maker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, announced the FDA's acceptance of its application for Quartette (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol and ethinyl estradiol), which the company called the first ascending-dose, extended regimen oral contraceptive for preventing pregnancy.

Weis Markets on Tuesday reported a 12.1% increase in its second-quarter net income to $23.2 million.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Tuesday reported a 12.1% increase in its second-quarter net income to $23.2 million. For the period ended June 30, second-quarter earnings per share increased 11.7% to 86 cents per share, compared with 77 cents per share for the same period in 2011.

Second-quarter sales increased 0.1% to $677.1 million while comparable-store sales increased 0.4%.

CARLISLE, Pa. — An Ahold USA executive has received honors from a New England business publication.

Ahold USA announced Tuesday that EVP and CFO Paula Price was named 2012 CFO of the Year in the public company category by the Boston Business Journal and was honored at the newspaper's annual luncheon last Wednesday. Ahold USA, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Royal Ahold, operates the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle supermarket chains and the Peapod online grocery service.

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — AmerisourceBergen on Tuesday announced that it has signed a three-year agreement to supply approximately $18.5 billion in pharmaceuticals to Express Scripts on an annual basis. The agreement is effective Oct. 1.

“We are honored that Express Scripts has chosen AmerisourceBergen to supply the brand pharmaceuticals it needs for its recently combined mail-order and specialty pharmacy business,” said Steven Collis, AmerisourceBergen president and CEO.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is touting its vaccinating pharmacists as the back-to-school season begins.

The retail pharmacy chain said its pharmacists were ready to provide vaccinations against pertussis, meningitis, hepatitis B, human papillomavirus and other diseases, in addition to providing advice on oral health, nutritional supplements, cough-cold supplies and first-aid kits.

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — AmerisourceBergen on Thursday reported that in its fiscal-year third quarter ended June 30, diluted earnings per share were 71 cents, an 8% increase over the prior-year quarter.

AmerisourceBergen's Specialty Group had another strong quarter with revenues up 8%, driven by another particularly strong performance in third-party logistics and in the company's vaccine and physician distribution business. Specialty Group represents significant opportunity for the wholesaler, Steven Collis, AmerisourceBergen president and CEO, told analysts.
