The Food and Drug Administration has approved a topical testosterone replacement therapy made by Endo Pharmaceuticals, Endo said last week.

CHADDS FORD, Pa. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a topical testosterone replacement therapy made by Endo Pharmaceuticals, Endo said last week.

The drug maker announced on Dec. 29 the approval of Fortesta (testosterone) gel, a treatment for men with low testosterone, which affects nearly 14 million men in the United States.

Endo said it planned to introduce Fortesta in the United States early this year.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board on Tuesday announced it temporarily will close Pronto wine kiosks statewide to address mechanical and technological issues.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board on Tuesday announced it temporarily will close Pronto wine kiosks statewide to address mechanical and technological issues.

The kiosks were located in 30 supermarkets across the state, including in Giant Food, Wegmans Food Market, Giant Eagle, The Fresh Grocer and Shop 'n Save stores.

FRAZER, Pa. — Frank Baldino, the founder, chairman and CEO of Cephalon, has died, the company said.

Cephalon announced that Baldino, 57, had died Thursday evening while on medical leave, calling him a pioneer in the biotechnology industry and an inspirational leader who would be “sorely missed.” Baldino, who received his doctorate in pharmacology from Temple University, founded the company in 1987 after several years at E.I. duPont de Nemours & Co.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid on Thursday posted sales of $6.2 billion, down 2.3%, for its third quarter ended Nov. 27. Same-store sales for the period declined 1.3%, representing flat front-end sales and a pharmacy comparable sales decline of 1.9%.

For the five-week period ended Nov. 27, which includes Black Friday sales, front-end sales were up 1.3% while pharmacy same-store sales, which included an approximate 248 basis points negative impact from new generic introductions, declined 2.5%. Overall monthly comps fell 1.3%.

French drug maker Sanofi-Aventis announced Tuesday that it had received fast-track designation from the FDA for its investigational Clostridium difficile vaccine. The FDA grants the designation to ease the development of new drugs and vaccines for serious or life-threatening conditions or unmet medical needs.
