BALTIMORE — The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is piloting a program that will allow state employees to receive medication therapy management services, the university announced.

AMSTERDAM — Royal Ahold has appointed Ben Wishart as group chief information officer, the Dutch supermarket operator said Tuesday.

In the newly created position, Wishart will report to CFO Jeff Carr and will work out of the company's Amsterdam headquarters. He previously worked at U.K. food retailer Morrisons as chief information officer. Ahold operates the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle supermarket chains in the United States, as well as the Peapod online grocery service.

WASHINGTON — Medicare Part D plans that create tiered networks of pharmacies for beneficiaries need more oversight amid reports that small and medium-sized pharmacies are being excluded from them, several senators wrote in a letter last week to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

NORTH WALES, Pa. — Teva Health Systems has launched a generic injectable drug for small-cell lung cancer, the company said Tuesday.

Teva, a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceuticals, itself a subsidiary of Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, announced the launch of topotecan injection in the 1 mg-per-1 mL strength, in 4 mL, single-dose vials.

The drug is a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's Hycamtin.

WASHINGTON — Seasonally adjusted retail sales increased by 0.6% in April over last year, while unadjusted retail sales increased 3.9%, according to numbers released Monday by the Department of Commerce.

The figures, which exclude cars, gas stations and restaurants, showed that retail sales for the month increased 0.1%.

WASHINGTON — The Generic Pharmaceutical Association has promoted Jason Money to associate VP federal government affairs, the trade group said Monday.

MINNEAPOLIS — Superheroes like Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and others will be showing up at Target stores this summer.

The mass merchandise retailer has signed a deal with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment to introduce Justice League merchandise. Other characters in the comic franchise include Aquaman, Cyborg, The Flash and Wonder Woman. The collection will appear at all Target stores on Sunday and will include products like melamine dinnerware, sand toys and beach towels. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

SAN DIEGO — A biotech company and a nonprofit organization are looking into new ways to treat patients with the devastating degenerative disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The ALS Emergency Treatment Fund and Denovo Biomarkers announced Friday a deal to explore the use of personalized medicine in treating patients with the disease, known medically as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The two said the approach could accelerate drug development in ALS and other life-threatening disorders.
