CARLISLE, Pa. — A division of Ahold USA is donating millions of dollars to local schools.

Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets, also known as Giant-Carlisle, announced Wednesday the donation of $3 million to 2,868 public and private schools through its A+ School Rewards program for the 2012-2013 school year. The program has donated more than $16 million since 2005. The program allows local schools to earn money for technology, scholarships, school programs, field trips, playgrounds and other needs.

The 1,240-store chain said it would offer a selection of products for outdoor entertaining, road trips, summer beauty and first aid and information on choosing the right sunscreen, sunglasses and barbecue recipes.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration will review an experimental contraceptive patch made by Actavis, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Actavis said the FDA accepted for review its application for norethindrone transdermal delivery system. The patch, which does not yet have a brand name, is designed to provide continuous delivery of norethindrone during a once-weekly, seven-day dosing regimen.

AMSTERDAM — Royal Ahold has appointed Ben Wishart as group chief information officer, the Dutch supermarket operator said Tuesday.

In the newly created position, Wishart will report to CFO Jeff Carr and will work out of the company's Amsterdam headquarters. He previously worked at U.K. food retailer Morrisons as chief information officer. Ahold operates the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle supermarket chains in the United States, as well as the Peapod online grocery service.

NORTH WALES, Pa. — Teva Health Systems has launched a generic injectable drug for small-cell lung cancer, the company said Tuesday.

Teva, a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceuticals, itself a subsidiary of Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, announced the launch of topotecan injection in the 1 mg-per-1 mL strength, in 4 mL, single-dose vials.

The drug is a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's Hycamtin.

The ALS Emergency Treatment Fund and Denovo Biomarkers announced Friday a deal to explore the use of personalized medicine in treating patients with the disease, known medically as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The two said the approach could accelerate drug development in ALS and other life-threatening disorders.
