NEW YORK — Royalty Pharma has hired Marshall Urist as VP research and investments, the company said Friday.

Royalty, which invests in royalty interests in drugs, hired Urist from Morgan Stanley, where he worked most recently as executive director and the senior biotechnology analyst.

"We are excited to have Marshall join our team," Royalty founder and CEO Pablo Legorreta said. "He has had a distinguished career on Wall Street, and this experience, coupled with his deep analytical skills, make him an excellent addition to Royalty Pharma."

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a cholesterol drug made by Par Pharmaceutical Cos., the drug maker said Thursday.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a cholesterol drug made by Par Pharmaceutical Cos., the drug maker said Thursday.

Par announced the approval of generic fenofibric acid delayed-release capsules in the 45-mg and 135-mg strengths. The drug is used to reduce triglycerides and increase "good" high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

The drug is a generic version of AbbVie's Trilipix, which has sales of about $554 million per year, according to IMS Health.

NEW YORK — The Jean Coutu Group is selling the last of its shares in Rite Aid Corp., according to a regulatory filing.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday, the Quebec-based pharmacy retailer announced that it would sell 65.4 million shares in Rite Aid at a price of $192.2 million.

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — Taro Pharmaceutical Industries has appointed Dilip Shanghvi as chairman, the Israeli generic drug maker said Thursday.

Taro said James Kedrowski would retire as interim CEO effective Aug. 1, to be replaced by Kalyanasundaram "Kal" Subramanian. Kedrowski will continue to serve as a member of the drug maker's board. Sundaram relinquished his position as chairman to comply with Israeli laws that prohibit a person from simultaneously holding the positions of chairman and CEO; he had served as chairman since April 2012.

PITTSBURGH — A federal court in New York has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that Mylan infringed four of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries' patents when it sought Food and Drug Administration approval for a multiple sclerosis drug.

Mylan had filed with the FDA for approval of a generic version of Teva's Copaxone (glatiramer acetate), attracting a patent-infringement suit from Teva alleging that it violated four patents on the drug, according to FDA records. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York has dismissed the case.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic epilepsy and bipolar disorder drug made by Actavis, the drug maker said.

The generic drug maker announced that it had received FDA approval for lamotrigine orally disintegrating tablets in the 25-mg, 50-mg, 100-mg and 200-mg strengths, a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's Lamictal ODT.

INDIANAPOLIS — Men who took an erectile dysfunction drug made by Eli Lilly experienced normal erectile function when taking it once a day as opposed to taking erectile dysfunction treatment on an as-needed basis, according to a new study.

The study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found a greater percentage of men who had an incomplete response to as-needed treatment with phosphodiesterase type 5, or PDE5 inhibitors, a drug class that includes Lilly's Cialis (tadalafil), compared with those who took Cialis once a day.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched a generic contraceptive therapy, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Mylan, through its Mylan Pharmaceuticals subsidiary, announced the launch of norethindrone tablets in the 0.35-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Actavis' Nor-Q.D. tablets, which are taken on a 28-day cycle to prevent pregnancy. Mylan is partnering with Famy Care, which filed for and received Food and Drug Administration approval for the drug.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Pharmacists in Indiana want an active consultation role when customers purchase over-the-counter HIV tests, according to a new study.

Researchers at Indiana University, Butler University and the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention, lead by center co-director Beth Meyerson, said that community pharmacists have a unique opportunity to consult with customers about HIV treatment when selling OTC HIV tests. Engaged and supportive pharmacists, the researchers said, could help increase the number of those who test for HIV and who are linked to treatment.

The chain announced that it would update and expand the Passport to Nutrition program to organizations that educate and work with children, such as schools, summer camps and scouting groups. The announcement follows a similar announcement last week by Landover, Md.-based sister chain Giant Food.

HAIFA, Israel — Self-reported medication adherence rates increased among Type 2 diabetes patients using a mobile app, the maker of the app said Monday.

MediSafe Project said it reviewed adherence rates among Type 2 diabetic users of its app, finding compliance rates at least 26% higher than the generate rate for long-term diabetes therapies, which the World Health Organization reports as 50%. A January 2013 study of the app, which the company launched in November 2012, found similar rates.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched a generic drug for treating cholesterol problems, the company said Monday.

Mylan announced the launch of generic fenofibric acid delayed-release capsules in the 45-mg and 135-mg strengths.

The drug is a generic version of Abbott's Trilipix, designed for use in combination with statin drugs and diet to reduce triglycerides and increase high-density lipoprotein or "good" cholesterol.

Various versions of the drug had sales of about $553.6 million during the 12-month period that ended in March, according to IMS Health.
