The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said in a report released Wednesday that drug makers had 444 drugs in clinical development or awaiting Food and Drug Administration approval for a range of diseases, ranging from mild to serious.

YoDerm charges $59 for a three-step plan. Users upload photos of their affected areas and answer several medical questions, a process that typically takes less than 10 minutes. Within 48 hours, a dermatologist examines the photos and information and creates a personalized treatment plan. After that, a treatment plan is delivered and, if included, a prescription is sent electronically to the user's preferred local pharmacy.

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Patient communication software maker PrescribeWellness has formed a deal with data-management firm Karmadata to send targeted patient communications to pharmacy customers, the company said Tuesday.

PrescribeWellness said the goal of the deal was to improve medication adherence and health management outcomes by using Karmadata's data mining and analysis of patient interactions for the design and automation of personalized communications. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Actavis hopes to become the first to market a generic drug for treating chronic pain, the company said.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Actavis hopes to become the first to market a generic drug for treating chronic pain, the company said Monday.

Actavis said it had filed with the Food and Drug Administration for approval of tapentadol extended-release tablets in the 50-mg, 100-mg, 150-mg and 200-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals' Nucynta ER. The drug is used as a continuous, around-the-clock analgesic over a long period of time.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Actavis is launching new formulations of a drug used to treat tension headaches, the company said Monday.

The drug maker announced new formulations for Fioricet (butalbital; acetaminophen; caffeine) capsules and Fioricet with Codeine that reduce the amount of acetaminophen from 325 mg to 300 mg. Actavis said the formulation would provide a safer treatment option for patients.

HYDERABAD, India — Dr. Reddy's Labs has launched a generic drug used to treat Alzheimer's disease, the company said.

The Indian drug maker announced the launch of donepezil hydrochloride tablets in the 23-mg strength, a generic version of Eisai and Pfizer's Aricept. The drug is being launched in 30- and 90-count bottles.

Aricept in the 23-mg strength had sales of about $92.6 million during the 12-month period that ended in May, according to IMS Health.

U.S.-based drug maker Perrigo Co. will buy Ireland's Elan Corp. for $8.6 billion, the companies said.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — U.S.-based drug maker Perrigo Co. will buy Ireland's Elan Corp. for $8.6 billion, the companies said Monday.

Elan is best known for the multiple sclerosis treatment Tysabri (natalizumab), marketed and distributed by Biogen Idec. Perrigo manufactures various branded and generic prescription and OTC drugs. A previously announced deal, whereby New York-based Royalty Pharma would acquire the Dublin-based drug maker, fell apart last month after Elan shareholders voted in favor of a share-buyback plan.

Sandoz, the generics division of Switerland-based Novartis, said the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals invalidated nine patents owned by Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries covering the drug Copaxone (glatiramer acetate).

According to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, HPV vaccination coverage for girls did not increase over last year. The survey included vaccination records of about 19,000 teenagers.

A company in Finland is about to launch a payment system that allows customers to use their face, according to published reports.

NEW YORK — Pretty soon, retail clerks may be asking customers if they want to pay with cash, credit or face, according to published reports. 

Popular Science reported that Finland-based Uniqul was creating a system that would take the customer's photo and then process biometric data, connecting it to their account. Customers would create the accounts using their credit or debit cards, and Uniqul said the system — which uses military encryption technology — would reduce time for payments from 30 seconds to less than five seconds.

In preparation for what the National Retail Federation calls the second-busiest shopping season of the year after the winter holidays, Rite Aid is including new computer accessories, wireless Internet routers, sheet and blanket sets, shower curtains and door mirrors. According to the NRF, college living essentials are likely to see an increase in spending this year.

The chain, a subsidiary of Sears Holdings, said the nationwide launch of Pay in Store for members of the Shop Your Way loyalty program marked a first in the company's "integrated retailing" program, calling it an example of how it is evolving to provide a seamless and integrated shopping experience for members, whether they shop online, through mobile or at the store.

The generic drug maker had filed with the Food and Drug Administration for a generic version of Orion's Stalevo (carpidopa; levodopa; entacapone) tablets, used to treat idiopathic Parkinson's to substitute for immediate-release carbidopa/levodopa and entacapone administered separately.
