ARLINGTON, Va. — The Senate voted overwhelmingly to confirm a former Virginia Health and Human Services secretary as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Members of the Senate voted 91-7 in favor of confirming Marilyn Tavenner to lead CMS, drawing praise from a retail pharmacy trade group.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Walmart opened a new small-format store on the campus of Arizona State University as part of a pilot program, the mass merchandise retailer said.

The company opened the 5,000-sq. ft. store in the Vista del Sol plaza at the university. The store includes health and wellness services, a pharmacy, convenient shopping services, convenience items and merchandise tailored to the campus. The Walmart on Campus store is the second in the country, the first having opened at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in January 2011.

NEW YORK — Acosta Sales and Marketing has appointed two new executives, the company said.

Patrick O'Reilly has been hired as VP and team leader for the company's CVS team. O'Reilly previously spent 25 years working for Eastman Kodak as director of sales for the drug channel and CVS team leader and was also VP sales for the drug channel at Foster Grant International.

Kevin Downey has been hired as director of Acosta's CVS team. He previously spent 25 years working for Mars North America and was the Mars CVS team leader.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for a type of lung cancer.

Roche subsidiary Genentech and the U.S. subsidiary of Japan's Astellas Pharma announced the approval of Tarceva (erlotinib) for advanced non-small cell lung cancer whose tumors have mutations that activate the epidermal growth factor receptor. The FDA also approved a test to detect the mutation.

The drug was already approved for advanced NSCLC that did not exhibit the mutation.

PITTSBURGH — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic migraine drug made by Mylan, the company said Wednesday.

Mylan announced the approval of zolmitriptan tablets in the 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths. The drug maker plans to launch the product immediately.

The drug is a generic version of IPR Pharmaceuticals' Zomig and is used for the acute treatment of migraine in adults. Various versions of the drug had sales of $152.8 million during the 12-month period that ended in March, according to IMS Health.

CARLISLE, Pa. — A division of Ahold USA is donating millions of dollars to local schools.

Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets, also known as Giant-Carlisle, announced Wednesday the donation of $3 million to 2,868 public and private schools through its A+ School Rewards program for the 2012-2013 school year. The program has donated more than $16 million since 2005. The program allows local schools to earn money for technology, scholarships, school programs, field trips, playgrounds and other needs.

CANTON, Ohio — According to a study published 10 years ago, depression costs $44 billion per year in lost productivity, but a new program is designed to raise awareness about depression in the workforce and its effects on productivity.

WASHINGTON — Walgreens Take Care Health Systems and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties are sponsoring a new program to support the clinical education of nurse practitioners, the two announced.

"NONPF is very pleased to have the support of a strong clinical leader such as Take Care Health Systems," president Debra Barksdale said. "The important role that NPs play by providing care at Take Care Clinics and the clinical education of NP students makes this a natural partnership."

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration will review an experimental contraceptive patch made by Actavis, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Actavis said the FDA accepted for review its application for norethindrone transdermal delivery system. The patch, which does not yet have a brand name, is designed to provide continuous delivery of norethindrone during a once-weekly, seven-day dosing regimen.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General is sponsoring career fairs at 170 of its stores as part of an effort to hire 10,000 new employees this month, the company said Tuesday.

The company said it would have representatives to discuss opportunities, receive resumes and talk about long-term opportunities.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is sponsoring its second annual nail-art contest, the retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

Rite Aid announced the launch of its "Nail Extravaganza," based around the two-round "Search for the Rite Aid Nail Enthusiast" contest; the first round runs through May 24. Contestants compete for 20 prizes by submitting nail designs at Riteaidnails.com.
